"Geez that girl knows how to overreact!" I huff to myself.
For the rest of the day, Liberty wouldn't talk to me. Shoosh, the girl wouldn't even look at me. Maybe I shouldn't have joked about it right to her face...
I was relieved when the ending bell rang and kids rushed to their cars and or buses. I dashed up the bus steps and plopped down into a random seat. It was a Friday, so if I was going to appologize to Liberty, it was going to be over the phone.
"Can I sit here?" Someone asked. I looked up to see Peter Richards glancing down at me, a friendly look on his face. For some weird reason my heart flutters, and I don't like it.
I hesitate before saying, "Yes."
He slid into the seat, smelling thickly of Axe. I almost started to lean in closer just to smell him! But, I did manage to stop myself. I swear, every time I was around this guy my head got all foggy.
"Stop yelling Melissa!" The bus driver screeched at a freshman who was fat enough to have caused that earthquake in Hedi a couple of years back.
"But Mrs.Long! I won't talking!" Melissa yelled, her use of 'won't' was grammatically incorrect. I stand up and yell, "Melissa! Where'd you get your brain from? The Dollar Store?" Then the entire bus erupts with laughter, including Peter beside me.
I know this is going to sound cheesy, but I get the warm fuzzies inside when I put a smile on his face. My cheeks warmed as he glanced up at me. I looked away quickly and sat down. I remember the look of scowl on Melissa's face just as I had sunk back down in my seat. I smiled to myself in satisfaction.
Like the morning, this afternoon was rocked with a pouring rain. My head was rested on the freezing glass as I peered through the drenched window. Peter was asleep beside me. I had no idea where Peter was getting off at since this isn't his normal route but I hope he didn't miss his stop. I was about to wake him when the bus hit a bump, and sent people flying in there seats. my head slammed against the window and Peter, still asleep, with his head now resting on my shoulder. I felt my cheeks get red. What's happening to me? I am usually more composed...
"Peter." I say as I gently give his shoulder a shake. "Peter..."
His eyes flutter open and for the first time, I notice how perfectly carved his cheek bones are... and beautifully long his eyelashes are as well. "Yeah?" He asks.
I feel my cheeks get red all over again as I say, "Nothing...it's just you were asleep. I didn't want you to miss your stop since you don't normally-"
"Oh, crap!" He says, his head raised off my shoulder now. "Where are we?" I take a moment to look out the window before answering. "Gumspring Road." I say. Peter let out a sigh of relief, then smiled at me.
It was only moments later that Peter got off, apparently he was spending the weekend with a guy named Tawkins, who was in our grade. I think I have heard that name too, I mean it's so unusual how do you forget it?
Slowly the bus drove off from Tawkins's stop and I found myself gazing back. Maybe I do really like Peter...
I heard a knocking at my door. "It's open!" I yell. I was so focused on my Trigonometry homework I didn't even notice when Jewel came in with my iphone.
"You left this at the dinner table, smart one!" She says as she tosses it to me. "I'm suprised you caught it!" Jewel laughs as she walks out, slamming the door behind her. I rolled my eyes and then decided I should call Liberty. I hope she'll forgive me.
She didn't answer. Three times I called her and no answer. Two times back-to-back and the third time fifteen minutes later. I moaned and got up to brush my teeth. As I looked into the mirror my heart ached when I once again noticed the absence of my beloved glasses.
I hopped into bed, pulling the purple covers up over my head. Under the blankets it was warm, and each breathe I took made it feel warmer. I smiled. But then almost immedialely I thought about my fight with Liberty.
I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping to push my friend problems away. "Why do I have to be so God forsaken stupid?" I whisper to myself. I was now laying on my side with my knees hugged to my chest. I just hope I don't smother in the night while I am under the covers.
I sighed, and in the prosses, I blew some of my mostly blonde with brown ends hair out of my face as a gentle trickle of tears run down my cheeks. I end up crying myself to sleep that night.
