The Facility of Failure

"Levi Colton."

Levi stood up, smoothing her spotless lab coat down over her legs. She hoped they didn't notice that she was shaking like a leaf. Being nervous might affect the evaluation, which was the last thing Levi wanted, not after getting so far...

She walked over to the stiff security unit who was waiting for her. His stiff collar, she noticed, was slightly bent at the front. His tag had the symbols A47 engraved in it.

A47. The top security team. So they do allow some imperfections...

Levi was escorted down a light red hall with a darker red carpet that muffled their footsteps. Levi, used to the hard, white floors of the halls, frowned. The security unit didn't seem to notice. In fact, Levi noticed, he seemed to be nervous himself. He fingered the edge of his collar agitatedly. He didn't seem much older than Levi herself, maybe a few years at most.

When they reached the hall, the unit stepped in front of the scanner, effectively blocking it from Levi's view as he entered in whatever codes and scans it required. After a few minutes, he stepped back and conjured a laminated card, which he swiped across the surface of the scanner. It flashed green, and the wooden doors automatically opened.

The two stepped through into a room with the same walls and floor as the hall required to access it. The only difference was the various framed news clippings and awards framed on the walls, and the heavy wooden desk in the center of the room. Two plush velvet rolling chairs stood on opposite sides of the desk, and one was occupied by a blonde man wearing a red suit. The gold nameplate at his desk read "David Fall, Y.E.E".

Levi sat, folding her hands across the desk and sitting straight up as instructed by the instructor. The evaluator smiled.

"Good memory, I see. This one has potential."

The security unit gave a stiff nod, the only form of acknowledgement he gave them.

"So, Levi Colton, was it?" He asked. He turned to his tablet and tapped in a couple commands, then turned the screen so Levi could see.

Levi quickly read the file, and looked back to the evaluator, who by then
had pulled a sheet of paper from a folder. After taking a pen from the black pencil cup, he pushed them both towards Levi. Levi glanced at the security unit, who gave her a look that said why are you looking at me? I can't help you! She quickly looked back at the paper.

She was answering the questions that would determine her future.
