"It was influenced by Jim Maclaine's reference to the decor in his Spanish castle in Ray Connolly's novel of "Stardust" (1974). I wrote the lyrics as Maclaine's expression of love for his former girlfriend, 'Danielle'. It was the final song I'd written for the concept of the fictional rock opera in the book/movie. I'd been previously listening to "When You Love Someone" by Bryan Adams from MTV's 'Unplugged' and I wrote 'White Marble Heaven' with a similar musical arrangement in mind. I contemplated having the words "so blue" in parenthesis as part of the title, but then decided just to keep them in the final verse. I have a fondness for the ideas that flowed throughout the crafting of this song..." - writer/lyricist, Tony G. Marshall...
I began to sing the final song
The words they rang so true
I sang the words so tenderly
When I then gazed at you
Champagne on ice was oh so chilled
Sparkling like marble, so new
The words they were so heavenly
Like the love I have for you
Pure and white; the flowers you gave
Adorned the pianist's view
The words I sang so naturally
As some were meant for you
The glory of woman was the song
My Friend, My Lover – a clue
The words rang out so beautifully
They were so much part of you.
The final song we knew the name
But this one, it was new
The words I chose so carefully
White Marble Heaven – so true.
The final song has finished now
Just like our friendship too
These words are spoken lovingly
White Marble Heaven – so blue.
