an: one of my current favorite seaycee reads is "songs about us" by seayceeok (you should check it out if you haven't) - i think the concept is super cool, and it inspired me to write this <3

You say you'll be down in five

"I'll be down in five minutes!" she calls from the upstairs bathroom. I smile and can't help but laugh to myself. Leave it to Kaycee to tell me to be on time, only for her to be running late herself.

The smell of your perfume is floating down the stairs, you're fixing up your hair like you do

A light smell of strawberries hits my nose as I take a deep breath. The only thing I can think of that has Kaycee running late is her hair. She must be finishing straightening it, despite me telling her that her natural curls are beautiful.

I know that I'll be a mess the second that I see you

Because that's what she is. Beautiful. Despite us being friends for years, despite the relationship we've hidden for months, I'm still awed by her inner and outer beauty every time I see her.

You won't be surprised, it happens every time, it's nothing new

It makes her laugh - how I seem to lose the ability to function when she walks in the room. "I feel honored," she always says with a giggle, "Sean Lew has lost his usual perfect-ness, and it's all because of me."

It's always on a night like tonight

I shoot a nervous glance around the hallway. These five minutes seem like an eternity. You'd think after spending every day together, we'd get sick of each other. But we never do. Date night has become a regular fixture in our lives. And whether we go somewhere or we cuddle on the couch, watching Friends for the thousandth time, I'm never bored with Kaycee around.

I thank God, you can read my mind

Words haven't ever been a real problem for us. It's that connection everyone talks about us having - she always knows what I'm thinking, which is one of many things about her that I love so much.

'Cause when you look at me with those eyes, I'm speechless

I look up as I hear footsteps on the stairs, and am met with the most brilliant smile. "How do I look?" Kaycee giggles, a twinkle in her deep brown eyes. The answer is obvious - she's stunning. The light inside her is so brilliant that she seems to be visibly glowing.

I move my mouth to tell her, but no sound comes out. This only makes her laugh more. "Cat got your tongue, Lewser?" she asks playfully.

Kaycee never wears dresses, but tonight seems to be an exception. The white fabric is simple and flattering, the perfect color for an angel.

What it's doing to me ain't a secret

How I've felt for Kaycee has never been a secret, I suppose. I can't even count how many times I've been outed by someone else - or myself.

Especially in my new years post for 2019 - I thought I was being so subtle. And then the first text I got was from Kaycee asking why I thought I could get away with my song selection.

'Cause watching you is all that I can do

Kaycee smiles and places a soft kiss on my nose. "Well, unless our date is standing here all night, I'd love to head out," she laughs. I watch her turn and walk towards the door. "You coming, Shamu?"

And I'm speechless.
