Madison Clark was unsure about Hamptonville when she first moved there. She could not seek comfort in the massive house, drafty and full of boxes, or the endless front lawn, where the driveway was lined with moving trucks. The idea of moving schools in the spring of her senior year terrified Madison. The students at Hamptonville High came from wealthy families. She felt strangely isolated in her second-hand jeans. The only social interactions she had had were short pleasantries with a girl named Lolita in English class and a smile from a girl with doll-like blue eyes in the hallway. Aside from that, she felt uncomfortably alone.
As Madison strolled across the lawn of her new home, she felt herself daydreaming of the pizza shop stationed across the street from her apartment back in New York.
