Melinda spent another long day examining the body of a victim for the Special Victim's Unit and was finishing up her paperwork at her desk. For years, she loved staying at work because she didn't have to go home to an empty apartment. But now, someone is waiting for her.
She and her husband had worked together for many years before taking their relationship to the next level. But, they always tried their best to keep the marriage a secret in fear that it may interfere with their careers.
Grabbing her purse and briefcase with cases to look over she decided to call it a night when there is a know it her door.
"Come in" she called
"Melinda can I have a word before you go"? asked her boss
"Sure. What's going on" asked Melinda
"As you know, I will be retiring next month and if I had to chose one person to take my place as Chief M.E I couldn't think of a better person than you" he said
"I don't know what to say Chief" said a stunned Melinda
"Just say you will do it. I will feel a lot better about retiring if I know that you will be in charge" He smiled
"Thank you so much" she smiled reaching her hand out to shake his

"I'm home" said Melinda walking through the door of her apartment
"Hey! Just got home myself " smiled her husband kissing her
"I have great news" she smiled
"What is it" he asked
"You are looking at the new Manhattan Chief Medical Examiner" she smiled
"Mel! That's amazing! I couldn't be more proud of you" he smiled kissing her
She felt like she was on cloud 9 she has an amazing career and a perfect husband. She felt like nothing could get better for her.
