Chapter 1: Raindrops on Roses

Tuesday
6:00 am

The rain dashed against the car window as the sun rised in the east. The harsh glow cracked through each pane of glass like a loud voice in a silent room. Squinting, Marseille sat up in the backseat of her car and stretched. Turning to her bag, she desperately searched for a good outfit to wear to school. Not having a lot of options, Marseille settled for a white tank top underneath an oversized, navy blue sweater. The sweater appeared to have paint splatters all over it. As for the tank top, it had an embroidered lavender in the middle.

Marseille unplugged her phone from the portable charger that she was "borrowing" from a friend. Her pale finger tapped the home button, revealing her lockscreen. The time read, "6:30 AM", school started in half an hour. Marseille slid her socks and shoes on and hopped in the drivers seat. Opening the middle console, she scrambled for her car keys until she had finally found them. There were 2 keychains. One of them was a sparkly palm tree that had cursive letters saying, "Hawaii". The other was a pink cat tag that said, "Bee", along with a phone number. Her keys were attached to a pale yellow lanyard, that also held her I.D for school. Marseille started her car and drove to school. The drive there was pretty gloomy. The grey sky, along with mud puddles made the perfect recipe for boredom.

Finally arriving at school, her car steered into an empty parking space. Marseilles parking job wasnt exactly perfect, but it was good enough. Turning around to the backseat, she grabbed her beige school backpack, took her keys out of the ignition, and threw them in her bag. There were many things in her bag. A toothbrush, her school books, a hair brush.. etc. Marseille hopped out of her car and wrapped her backpack onto her shoulders, adding some more weight on as she walked into the glass entrance to the school. Marseille walked into the girls bathroom and went in front of a sink. She took her toothbrush, hairbrush, and mascara out of the front pocket of her bag and got ready for school. There were several girls getting ready, the beach blondes touching up their hair, the goths doing their eyeliner, and then there was Marseille.

The crack of the first warning belle rang, reminding the students to hurry to first period. Marseille shuffled in her locker to find her geometry book, but had no luck. She slammed her locker shut in frustration and walked to class.

"Martin?"

"..here"

"Kylie."

"Here!"

"Ed?"

"Present."

Marseille blanked out as the teacher called attendance. Its was almost like being in a different dimension, getting lost in thought. She pulled out her sketch book and her number two pencil. Before she can put her pencil on paper, there was a.. what seemed like distant.. voice.

"Marseille..."

The way the teacher said her name.. wasnt right. She shook out of her dimension.

"Oh.. um.. it's pronounced Mar-SAY. Its french.. but people usually just call me Mars.
