The petals fluttered in the wind
As the river stood frozen along the bend
The moon was hung up in the sky
As an owl sang a lullaby
The moonlight found the friendly face
Of a girl walking in this cold, dark place
She paused when before her she saw a lone wolf
His red eyes glowing, his fur shaggy and gruff
She looked down and smiled at the beast
She didn't tremble, not in the least
For she knew this wolf- she had seen him before
When as a pup he'd shown up at her door
She had fed him and loved him and let him go
Now he stood before her in the snow
She reached out to pet him- he recoiled in fear
It seemed he'd forgotten her over the years
She sighed, and turned away in the dark
All was silent but the sound of the lark
A sound that was followed by an earsplitting scream
"This can't be real," she thought. "It must be a dream
It sunk its teeth in her flesh; She knew not what to do
All she could think was, "This, I will not make it through!"
Lying in the snow in a pool of her blood
She looked up to the wolf and cried, "What have you done?"
He bared his teeth, his eyes a fiery red
She asked, "I saved you- why now have you left me for dead?"
The beast tilted his head and leaned down towards her face
And before the light faded, she heard him say
"It was your choice to save me- your choice not mine
Don't you pin this on me! You should have left me to die.
You know well as I, I can't help what I do
If you want to blame someone, then blame this on you
For no matter how innocent I seemed back then
You knew I was a wolf when you let me in."
