"Hey, what's your heart like?" A cheeky little boy came over by a small girl playing alone in a sandbox. He quickly plopped down next to her and crossed his legs, awaiting his answer. The small girl barely acknowledged him, continuing to shovel scoops of sand into her bucket.
The boy pouted, realizing he was being ignored. " Come on, I just want to see your heart! I'll show you mine, too!"
No answer.
The little boy sighed, almost in defeat, towards the girl. "Look, my name's Timmy... Can we at least be friends?" He dug through the tiny box of sand, finally acquiring a tiny bulldozer, and held it for the girl as some kind of peace offering.
Slowly, the little girl turned towards the little boy as her long black hair drifted past her gloomed face. She tilted her head, almost in confusion, as her black eyes gazed at the blonde.
"Really?" she whispered, looking down at the small bulldozer in his hands. "Don't you have...friends of your own?"
"Yeah, but they all said I'm really annoying, haha..." Timmy scratched the back of his head, laughing solemnly. "But, anyway, what's your name?"
The girl stared back at him for a moment, contemplating on if she should give her name to the awkward and somewhat annoying boy, until she looked down again, mumbling, "Selena...My name is Selena..."
"That's a really nice name!"
"Thanks."
The two looked away in silence, none knowing what to say to break the tension between them. Finally, after a long moment of avoidance, Timmy placed his heart on his chest and opened his hand revealing his holographic heart. The girl's eye's widened in surprise as she gleamed upon her new friend's heart.
The blonde had a big heart, glittered with different colors and shapes. Blue circles, red triangles, green swirls, and so on. It was almost a was party in his heart. The girl quickly looked away, a spark of jealousy in her eyes, which had disappeared quicker than it even appeared. She soon resumed back to her old self, glooming over the sandbox and the boy.
"I never asked or agreed to see your heart," she stated, indifference once again filling her voice.
"I know, but I trust you. Everyone shows there hearts! Can you show yours, too?"
"No!"
The boy pouted again, "Why?"
"Because I said so." The girl quickly responded
"Jeez, you sound like my mom," The boy rolled his eyes, but suddenly stopped when he saw the hurt expression on the girl. In a softer tone, he added, "You don't have to show it to me if you don't want to..."
No answer.
Getting more annoyed, the little boy started yelling, "What's wrong with you? You act like you are the onl-"
The blonde quickly stopped as he saw the girl starting to whimper and cry. Transparent tears flowed down her face, leaving behind its salty residue. Worried, the boy got down on his knees, hugging his crying friend and repeating "Sorry, I'm so sorry" to comfort her. Finally, the black-haired girl stopped crying with only a few sniffles heard from time to time. The boy hugged her tighter, unable to contain his remorse.
"I'm so sorry... I just wanted to see your heart... I wanted to know who you are as a person!" The blonde slowly let go of the girl, "Please... you know what kind of person I am since I showed you my heart...I just wanted to know yours."
The girl looked down, avoiding eye contact from the boy, "You promise you won't get scared or laugh?"
The blonde quickly stood straight up, crossing his heart and nodded, "I-pinkie-dinkie-winkie-swear-on-my-life-promise!"
The girl nervously put her hand to her chest, shaking as she reached inside her soul to get her heart. Slowly, she pulled her heart out. He widened his blue eyes when he saw the heart.
The girl's holographic heart was shattered like glass, millions of pieces broken. Each piece glitched into different colors while black glow outlined the shape of a beautiful angelic heart, where the broken pieces should've been. Every second, at least one shattered piece of her heart glitched. It was beautiful. It was horrifying.
The boy was rendered speechless until he mustered up his words, asking the poor girl one question.
"Who hurt you?"
The girl looked away, tears forming on the brink of her eyes, "You're scared, aren't you? I was born this way." She looked up at him, as she mouthed one word: Liar.
The boy swiftly shook his head, eyes still wide open. "No! You got it all wrong. I was just surprised. I've never seen a broken heart before. It's...unique. But are you ok?"
No answer.
The blonde picked up the bulldozer from the sandbox and smiled. He handed it to the girl once more as a piece offering. She blankly stared at it, finally asking, "Why are you giving me this toy?"
The boy gazed into her black eyes, "The toy is going to be my promise."
The girl raised one of her eyebrows, "And what is that promise?"
"I promise I will fix your broken heart before I die." The little boy's smile grew as he held her hand tightly, "And I never break a promise."

Author's note
Welcome, to the first chapter of my new book PARALLEL.
This story will be set in the near future where all humans have evolved with a holographic heart.
In the future, every holographic heart is unique to each host, almost like their fingerprints.
Each heart represents the true personality of its host, as well as symbolizing their true nature and desires.
In this world, it is illegal to break someone's heart-since it represents them being murdered/dead.
It is impossible to live with a shattered heart, as it is equivalent to a person's heartbeat....or is it?
Join Selena in her journey between life and death, dreams and nightmares, avoidance and acceptance, and even maybe even love.
Whatever happens, there is no doubt that it will be a crazy ride down the rabbit whole!
Also, sorry for the bad music!
