Mike tried not to think about Max too much. He of course, was with Eleven but there was just something so enchanting about Max and it annoyed Mike immensely as he could not muster why he gave Max a second thought. It felt like an itch under his skin that he could never banish. He desperately tried to ignore it and hoped it would go away yet he found himself on occasion thinking of her and the intrigue and mystery that followed her. Why was he even giving her attention after her attitude and the general respect ( or lack thereof) she has for others? Maybe if he knew more about her the thoughts would stop and if they didn't Mike would scold himself harder. Regardless, he was fully committed to Eleven and hated thinking about Max.
In fact, Mike was so engrossed in the puzzle of Max that he didn't realize what was happening around him and he soon came out of his dazed state to see that Max was standing to the side of him with Lucas and Will behind her. Mike could feel that she was about to make fun of him for how weird he looked
"Keep it in your pants wheeler" Max jested.
"Shut up" Mike snapped.
"How was the resort anyway?" Lucas asked, standing further away from Max than he usually does.
"The worst vacation ever " Mike replied
"Suuuure it was wheeler. What did you and your perfect family only manage to get two photos or something? " Max sneered
"Stop being so bitchy Max" Lucas sharply put
"Jesus Lucas it was just a joke relax" Max added
Mike let out a sigh and rolled back his eyes deciding not to dignify Max with a response .There was a brief period of awkwardness that followed in which no one said anything. Will chipped in and changed the topic by asking
"Anyway how are things between you and El , Mike?" Will asked
Max looked down at this point, zoning out of the conversation, she disliked Eleven because of she felt her friendship with her and Mike had been blocked by Eleven. She wanted to be friends with Mike but because of how El fueled the situation by acting like a complete bitch to any other girl that was friends with Mike it forced a tense atmosphere between the two and Max hated it. She couldn't really take it out on El so she just put her effort into acting that way towards others, especially Mike. Max returned to the conversation when she heard her name mentioned
"What about you Max?" Will continued.
"What? I wasn't listening" Max stated as she looked down and felt the awkwardness whilst everyone stared at her and judged
"Are you going on the AV trip?" He asked again.
"Uhhhh, I don't know, i don't think my parents would let me leave Hawkins be- " Lucas interrupted her
"Well i'm not going, i can think of a million better ways to spend a weekend" He laughed.
"Looks like it will just be you Mike, Sorry" Will apologized
"Great" Mike sarcastically enthused
"I better get back to go see my Mom and little sister" Mike excused himself, hurried out of the arcade and pedaled back to his house
"My Mom is gonna pick me up soon as well so i'll see you later i guess" Will added as he left.
Then it was just Lucas and Max left who had both felt awkward around one another and refused to even so much as look at each other. Max liked him but it was just sometimes Lucas acted like a jerk and neither of them were too particularly happy.
a few seconds passed with both of them looking at the floor
"Listen uh- Max, can we go back to my house?" Lucas questioned
"What for?" Max retorted
"I want to show you something" He stated
Lucas was cryptic and vague, but Max was intrigued and so decided that she would follow him and see what it was that he wanted her to see
