The Last Goodbye

“Do you love me?” She asked the boy.

“Or is my heart just a toy?”

He replied, “Of course I love you, of course I care.”

An awkward silence filled the air.

“What’s wrong?” He asked with the sweetest concern.

The tears in the back of her eyes burned.

“Nothing, my love.” She replied with a smile.

But her eyes were as distant as a mile.

“Are you okay?” He asked again.

She nodded with a slight grin.

The days passed, and she asked once more:

“How long will you love me for?”

He replied, “Forever and a day will my love for you run free.”

She couldn’t take it and looked away sadly.

“What’s wrong?” He asked with the sweetest concern.

The tears in the back of her eyes burned.

“Nothing, my love.” She replied with a smile.

But her eyes were as distant as a mile.

“Are you okay?” He asked again.

She nodded with a slight grin.

Weeks passed when she finally said,

“I’m sorry, but I’m ending this dread.”

“What do you mean?” He asked turning blue.

His eyes searched her frantically for a clue.

She couldn’t do it – she looked away.

She hated seeing him in so much pain.

“What’s wrong?” He asked – his voice misshaped.

The tears in the back of her eyes escaped.

“Nothing,” She replied.

She couldn’t look in his eyes.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t love you –

You’ll find someone else who’ll love you too.”

He wiped his eyes, and looked away.

Then he said, “We’ll be okay.”

She shook her head – she had her doubt.

“I’m sorry, but this won’t work out.”

Months passed when he heard the news –

That his first true love would die soon.

He rushed to the hospital to her room.

The girl’s face was pale and blue.

A small smile crawled across her face.

He walked towards her at a slow pace.

“What’s wrong?” He asked with the sweetest concern.

The tears in the back of her eyes burned.

“Nothing, my dear.” She replied with a smile.

But her eyes were as distant as a mile.

“You’re not okay.” He said for a fact.

She shook her head and agreed with that.

“I’m dying,” She finally said.

Then she explained how the cancer spread.

The boy cried out in utter despair,

As she showed him the gaps and spaces in her hair.

“Hush, hush, my love.” She managed to say.

“It’s time for me to go away.”

He took her hand, he wouldn’t let go.

“No,” He prayed. “No, please, no.”

A single tear rolled out of her eye –

For she had loved him all her life.

He wiped his eyes and looked away.

Then he said, “We’ll be okay.”

She shook her head – She had her doubt.

“I’m sorry, but I’m all worn out.

The hours passed when he heard the sound

Of the flat line dying down.

“No,” He pleaded. “No,” He begged.

All he could do was shake his head.

He couldn’t manage the tears in his eyes,

As he said his last goodbye.
