Late

I awoke slowly, and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. I looked around my boring old room, I noticed I was going to be late for school. I threw myself out of bed and headed to the bathroom to take a shower. The hot water was refreshing as my grogginess became more and more distant. I ran around trying to get all of my assignments as I inhaled a piece of toast. I rushed out of my back door into my yard and tried to calm my breathing.

I grinded my teeth to hold back a yelp as my bones snapped and molded into bigger hollow bones, and my muscles expanded. I looked over myself to see the complete transformation, a huge black dragon. I spread my giant dark wings and jumped into the sky.

Flying up over the clouds so no one saw me, I strained my ears to listen for the bell. I heard the first bell and tried to beat my wings faster. I saw the school between clouds and dove toward it, folding my wings to gain more speed. Right before crashing into a field behind the school, I snapped my wings open to catch air and landed softly. I transformed back into my original self, light brown hair, green eyes, and ran towards the school.

When I rushed through the front door, the tardy bell rang. Cursing under my breath, I rushed to my first class.

"Late again I see Kaida" the teacher said as I opened the door and walked in.

"I'm so sorry Mr. Bates, I was up late doing homework and slept in" I lied.

"Just sit down" Mr. Bates said, "As I was saying before I was interrupted, we have a new student in our class today. His name is Lycan Wolfhart"

He gestured toward a boy standing beside him, he had really dark brown eyes and jet black hair with light brown skin. He was wearing a blue jacket and ripped jeans with black and white Nikes.

" Just sit anywhere you like Lycan" Mr. Bates said calmly.

To my surprise, Lycan started walking toward the seat next to me. He sat down beside me and set a notebook on the desk.

"Hi, Kaida is it?" Lycan asked.

"Yes" I replied.

"You're the late troublemaker ?" Lycan said with a teasing tone

I blushed, looking embarrassed, "I wouldn't really say troublemaker"

Lycan chuckled and looked at the bored and jostled down some notes. I opened my own notebook and started working on my sketch of  Pegasus.

"Wow, you drew that?" Lycan said looking over my shoulder.

"Y-yeah, I really like fantasy, weird animals, so I draw them all the time" I stammered

Stupid, no one says that I thought angrily at myself.

I continued sketching, with him glancing over my shoulder every once in awhile. I was concentrating so hard not to start blushing crazily, that when the bell rang to go to the next class, I jumped.

I started to clean up when Mr.Bates called to see me.

"Uh oh, someone is in trouble" Lycan said poking my arm.

I playfully pushed him away and headed toward Mr.Bates desk, "Your wanted to see me?"

"Yes Kaida, I know that life must be hard with your dad missing and your mom working double shifts, but I really need you to try and be on time, and actually finishing your homework." He said showing me my unfinished homework.

My anger flares, "I try bu-"

"I know, but I you need to try harder"

I nodded and he excused me, I headed to my next class. The day seemed to drag on forever. By the time it was lunch I was fed up with school and I just wanted to go home.

I was eating some fries when someone came up behind me. He had a sweet, cinnamon scent with a hint of an earthy smell.

"Hi, can I sit next to you?" He said.

I looked behind me and saw Lycan holding a tray.

"Oh uh... sure" I said scooting over.

"Thanks" He said sitting down.

"So how was your first day?" I asked picking at my food.

"Okay I guess," He said, "Hasn't been the first time being bullied."

"Oh, I'm sorry" I said suddenly feeling uncomfortable.

"Ah it's fine, I just ignore them" He said taking a bite of his pizza.

I just sat their destroying my food. He must've noticed.

"Are you going to eat that or torture it to death?" He asked teasingly.

I shrugged, thinking.

The gleam left his eyes, we sat there in silence. "Well, I'll see you later." He said picking up his tray, when he finished.

"I'll see you later Lycan." I called over my shoulder as he walked away.

When I got home from school, my mom was still at work. I sighed and went to my room downstairs in the basement.

My room was a disaster, clothes were all over the floor, pictures were crooked and trash was everywhere except in the trash bin. I threw my backpack onto the floor and started straightening up.

When I was only half way done, I heard the phone ring upstairs. I took the stairs two at a time and picked up the phone that was on the kitchen counter.

"Hello?" I said.

"Hi, honey" A familiar voice said.

"Mom?" I replied.

"Yes, how are you?" Mother asked.

"Okay, what happened." I said skeptically.

Mother laughed nervously, "So you know how I said how much I disliked my job and wanted to leave?"

I already knew what was coming.

"Turns out, I don't need to leave because... I was fired." She finished.

I stood there dumbfounded.

"What?!?" I asked in disbelief.

"I guess my boss doesn't like an unorganized cubical, or sarcasm." Mom said.

I gave her a fake laugh and then said I had to finish doing my homework. After we hung up I just sat there, not knowing what to do. I was frustrated at my moms boss for firing her, I was mad at my teacher for being so hard on me, I was mad at myself for not helping more than I was.

I looked around our boring, dirty, old kitchen, there were dishes in the sink, stains on the walls and ceiling. I wanted to cry, but I just couldn't because I knew there were people who had it worse.

I turned and opened our back door and ran outside. The only good thing about our house was the four acre field in the back. I felt the wind buffet my face, it felt good.

I ran into our field, and then stopped dead in my tracks. At my feet, was a giant dog print bigger than my hand. It couldn't have been an average dog, and we lived by no mountains or woods so it couldn't have been a wolf. Then I had the sudden feeling that I was being watched.

I nervously glanced around then ran back to my house. I slammed the door closed behind me, but I could still feel the piercing gaze on the back of my head. I was really scared now so I ran downstairs and shut my door and locked it. I closed my curtains and looked around, trying to see if that gaze belonged to something in the house. I couldn't feel the gaze so I hesitantly went back to my cleaning.
