I walked into my room (yes! got the right room) and searched for my cell phone. Scrolling through the numbers I came across one of my friend Jade’s phone number. Hitting the call button I walked over to my bed and throw myself across it stomach first and bounced my heels up and down while waiting for Jade to pick up.
I didn’t have to wait long as I’m sure Jade has her phone surgically attached to her hand.
“Oh my God Maya! Lyn just rang me and told me that Dougie asked you to the prom!” she squealed in my ear.
Cringing after the first word was squealed I had quickly pulled the phone far from my ear and just placed it on the bed instead. She was so loud; I could never stand the phone being too close to my ear when talking to her. Actually, come to think of it I may need to finally get around to reading the instructions of this phone and work out how to turn the volume down a lot, all of my callers recently had been killing my ears.
“Yeah about prom Jade, you’re not going to believe what’s happened” I started to say, hoping that she would join my little pity party that I was having for myself. As I launched into detail about this afternoon Jade would occasionally pipe up with indignant cries and gasps making me feel like I was completely in the right about not wanting to go to some new place on the other side of the world.
The speed of our impending departure was also cause for alarm according to Jade.
“Maya, what the frig is going on with your parents? No normal person would ever do this!”
I sighed and rolled onto my back picking up the phone and placing it on my chest while I fumbled for one of my pillows to stick behind my head, I knew that I should really get packing but hey, I had all night to do so and let’s face it, I’m sure that a flight to Australia takes a really long time so I can just catch up on my sleep during that. It would also take away the feeling of having to make conversation with the parental figures too.
Punching the pillow I lay there and listened to Jade rant on and on about how unfair they were and how my entire life is now ruined because I won’t be graduating with her and Lyn.
“I know, I just wanted to finish out my year here, go to college and spend more than six months in the one place.” I moaned.
“Hey, why don’t I pull out my laptop and we can search this place?” She said excitedly.
What? Oh wonderful, I’m so glad that someone’s looking forward to me moving across the world.
“Yeah, fine” I say
I hear the sound of her dragging her laptop out from under what sounds like a pile of clothes, she must have the phone tucked between her ear and jaw as all I can hear is the sound of her breathing.
“Right…” she begins “What is the town called again?”
I curl my lip not even wanting to repeat it but I tell her
“The Gold Coast, sounds like an Australian version of Florida just by the name of it though I’m sure it’s a one horse town.” I grumble. I bet there’s no good shopping to be found or anything fun there.
“The.. Gold.. Coast..” I hear her mumble as she’s typing.
A moment later she finds some information.
“Uh Maya, not as bad as you think. It’s not a town, it’s a city. It’s a city that’s right at the beach! Ohmygosh, there’s gotta be cute guys there, oh, you could find yourself a surfer and live happily ever after!” She rambled.
“Hmm sure, sounds freakin’ awesome” I say sarcastically but either she doesn’t pick up on it or she’s just too busy drooling over my new ‘city’.
