"How much bread do we have left now?" Jongho said as he searched the fourth cabinet in the kitchen. San shrugged while Hongjoong stayed silent.
"I can go steal some?" Mingi offered, resulted in Yunho lightly slapping his head.
"Absolutely not Mingi, you remember what happened the last time you did that?"
"I didn't get arrested though..." his eyes widened like a puppy's. Convincing Yunho however, was nearly impossible.
Even if you're Song Mingi.
Hongjoong sighed, "I'll get the bread, don't sweat it"
Yunho's anger was now directed towards the smaller, "not even you! You've nearly been caught a fair amount of times-"
"But I've NEVER been caught, have I?"
"You're all annoyingly stubborn, you know that?" San sighed as he downed his last bottle of water.
"Kinda have to be if you want to survive as a peasant, San" Hongjoong grunted. "What do you suggest then smartass?"
"Starve and die" Jongho butted in. It was his turn for a smack behind the head now.
"What? I thought it was a reasonable option-"
"Well, what I was going to say.." San began. "Why don't we marry a rich woman? They're quite easy to convince if you're well mannered and dressed"
"San...none of us are straight" Hongjoong sighed with disbelief.
"Excuse me" Jongho glared. "Am I invisible?"
"Don't even lie, we all know it" San argued. "And straight or not, so we have much of a choice?"
The room went silent for a moment while everyone took a moment to think. Money to them was more important than water, they needed it for their survival. And since Hongjoong was the oldest, he had the responsibility to take care of his friends before himself. They were family.
Yunho and Mingi married each other out of love, not for the money. Yunho came from a wealthier family and left that all behind for Mingi, he didn't care about anything else. Everyone else in the household however were unmarried and didn't have as much luck as the married couple did...unfortunately.
San got together with a few women in hopes of stealing some coins, none of those worked out. Hongjoong wasn't going to lie about his sexuality for money, and Jongho however was in denial...according to his housemates anyway.
"I'm not getting with a woman for money, San. I'm not attracted to-"
"You think all the women in this village marry rich old men for their looks and personality?" San chucked. "It's not all about the person-"
"Well it is to me. And if it means dying alone cause I can't find someone I like then so be it" Hongjoong walked out, slamming the door shut. He needed to let off some steam and the forest was just the place to do that.
He left everyone inside the house completely baffled, San slightly regretting his words. But at this rate he was desperate to survive living here.
Hongjoong walked for what felt like hours, even though it hasn't been half an hour yet. The forest dragged on and on like a maze and there was no other exit.
It got dark fairly quickly and Hongjoong started to become nervous as bushes started to rustle and noises of animals could be heard.
Especially wolves.
Hongjoong had heard many stories about wolves, he remembers his parents telling him the same tale almost every night before bed. They used to tell them humans could turn into wolves themselves if they're cursed.
He believed it when he was young of course. But the older he got, the more he thought of it as nonsense.
"There's no such thing as magic" Hongjoong scoffed to himself. "It's just a load of nonsense". He started to softly chuckle to himself until a noise stopped him in his tracks.
He thought he was tripping when he saw a yellow pair of greedy eyes stare into his own from afar. He gulped.
And then he started to run once another pair of eyes appeared from the bushes. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him.
But before he knew it, he was trapped. And he couldn't remember which direction he came from, he was stuck.
He turned around and started running another direction, but a wolf soon enough found him and stopped him in his tracks. More and more of the beasts surrounded Hongjoong as he fell to the ground, his heart racing at an alarming speed as he continued to be surrounded.
He was petrified.
