You wrapped the small object in your hands as neatly as you could, the silver and red paper folding to completely cover it. You broke off a few pieces of tape and secured the parcel, walking it into the lounge and placing it beneath the beautifully decorated tree. Your father would be happy with his gift, at least you hoped he would. It was a handprint in plaster. It seemed like a childish and stupid gift for a teenager to give her dad to anyone else, but it was the perfect fit. You'd made one for him when you were in first grade and he loved it and treasured it. It had been for your mum and dad and they were both in love with it. About a year ago, a thief broke into your home and many things were broken, including the plaster handprint. Another thing that was broken that night was a family, your mother had been up when the house was invaded and tried to defend it, resulting in her death. When you'd been thinking of what to get your dad, that's all you could think about, so you decided to recreate it. Last time, on the back "I love you" was written in messy all capital letters, but this time around it was much neater and much more meaningful. The cursive lettering on the back read;

"Dear Dad, we've had a tough year, I'll be the first to admit it, but it's also been rewarding. We leaned how to grieve alone and with others and learned how much we really meant to each other. I know now more than ever that you are one of the most important things in my life and I will love you until my final breath. Mum would be proud of the both of us and I'm sure she is, wherever she's watching down on us from.

Needless to say, when he opened the gift and read the inscription, he was in tears. It was the best gift you could've given and he couldn't be more grateful.
