Liam (Your POV) – You sat rooted in the same spot for a while after Liam’s manager left. You couldn’t believe it; any of it. But what shocked you the most was that you didn’t know. How could Liam not tell you? How could you have spent so many hours on the phone to him and not even realize anything was wrong? It didn’t make sense, you knew Liam; you could read him like a book. You pulled your phone out of your pocket and dialed Liam’s number. Your finger hovered over the call button for a few seconds before you sighed and put your phone back down. You knew exactly what he would say if you told him what had happened. He would go crazy; he would get angry. He would tell you to ignore everything that had happened because nothing else mattered as long as you had each other and you would agree and tell him you loved him but all the while knowing that he was lying. Not only to you, but also, to himself. He loved you and you didn’t doubt that but he also loved his career and although he might tell you that nothing else mattered to him apart from the two of you being together nothing mattered to you more than Liam being happy and living his dreams and you knew that One Direction was a big part of that. The more you thought about it the more you realized that you had to end it. If you were instrumental to the end of Liam’s career he would end up resenting you. Ending things was your only option, no matter how much the thought made you feel like you had been punched through the chest, you knew you didn’t have a choice. You picked your phone back up and sent Liam a quick text asking him to phone you as soon as he could. The longer you put it off the harder it was going to be so you were almost relieved when he called you almost immediately. “Hi babe,” he beamed down the phone and you felt an uncomfortable twisting sensation in your stomach at the sound of his voice. “Are you okay?” he asked and you did your best to shift the lump that was forming in the back of your throat. “Hey, yeah I’m fine, how are you?” you asked, surprised at the fact that you managed to keep your voice steady. “I’m good thanks,” he replied happily. “How’s the tour going?” you asked, waiting for him to lie to you and tell you everything was great. “It’s incredible, how’s everything at home?” he asked and you could hear the slight upset in his voice as he spoke. You wondered if it had been there every other time you spoke but you had either been oblivious to it or in complete and utter denial as to how much your relationship was affecting his career. “Yeah they’re good, look Liam, we need to talk,” you muttered, your eyes began to sting slightly and you prayed that you wouldn’t break down so early into the conversation. “Sure, what’s up?” he was starting to sound worried. You had to break up with him and you had to make sure it was final. If you told him that it was because of what his management team had told you he’d never let you go and you knew it. Your mind was going at about a thousand miles an hour as you tried to figure out what you could possibly say and you must have been quiet for a long time because you snapped out of your trance to the sound of Liam’s voice asking you if you were still there. “Yeah I’m still here,” you eventually muttered back. “What’s wrong, you’re starting to worry me,” he chuckled to make it sound lighthearted but you could hear the nervousness in his tone. You sucked in a deep breath and forced yourself to tell the biggest lie you’d ever tell. “Liam, I’m not happy anymore,” you forced yourself to sound confident with your words even though your lip was quivering and your eyes were brimming with tears. “What do you mean you’re not happy?” Liam asked softly and you felt your stomach turning and you really felt like you might be sick. “I don’t know… I just, I can’t do this anymore,” you lied as tears began to slide down your cheeks. “You’re never here… I go to class and come back to an empty flat. I spend most of my days missing you…” you’re body began to wrack with silent sobs but you forced your voice to remain steady. “Y/N, don’t do this. You’re only saying this because we haven’t seen each other in a long time, visit me?” he pleaded, “you can miss a couple of days of class, it won’t hurt just to miss a couple of days.” You sighed and took a deep breath, “and what about the next time you tour, and the time after that and the time after that?” you asked and you could hear movement on his end of the line. You presumed he was going into a different room so he could talk to you in private. “When you graduate we won’t have this problem, we won’t have any reason to be apart, you can tour with me,” his voice was starting to shake slightly and you wanted nothing more than to agree with him and take back everything you said. “I don’t want that Liam, I want to live my own life, I want to get a job that I love,” you spoke through gritted teeth, almost as if the words were causing you physical pain as you spoke them. “Y/N, listen to me, please just listen,” he spoke firmly, “I love you, I’ll do anything to make this work. I just want it to be you and me forever; we knew it wasn’t going to be easy! We always knew that we were going to have to work hard at it every single day but I will do that for you because I love you. I love you Y/N and you love me,” his voice cracked as he finished speaking and you took a deep breath as you prepared yourself to speak the only words that you knew would end this. The only words that you knew would make sure that Liam let you go. “Liam, I don’t love you,” you whispered, “I don’t love you anymore, I’m so sorry,” you let out a small sob as you forced yourself not to take the words back immediately. “Well,” Liam muttered, his voice void of any emotion, “I guess… I guess that’s it then.”
