"(Y/N)?" Peter asked on the other end. "Where's Ned? I have something important to tell him."
"Yeah, it's so important that you had to miss the Decathlon for it, huh?" I pointed out. Ned looked embarrassed, but he just stood at my side silently. "I'm not mad about that, I'm sorry." I apologized. "It's just, why would you come on this trip if you weren't participating? Liz is gonna kill you next time she sees you. You know that, right? You could get expelled, or worse, blacklisted from every good club at Midtown Tech!"
"Why do you care about that? It's not your life!" Peter snapped, sounding agitated. He sighed, and was quiet for a bit. "Look, that sounded bad."
"Yeah, that sounded awful. Are you aware of how bad that sounded?" I said, getting peeved. "I'm sorry that I care about my best friends."
"Hey, I'm sorry, okay?" Peter said. "I swear that I will explain everything to you."
"When?"
Liz saw me with the phone, and stomped over. I thought she was going to yell at me, but she just grabbed the phone, and said: "Peter, is that you?"
Like I said before: Liz was going to murder Peter. At least I was able to warn him before it happened, though. I apologized to Ned for taking his phone, then went through the security system. Liz was walking behind me, still talking to Peter, and she was forced to hang up on him, and put the phone into the conveyor belt/metal detector.
The rest of the group was waiting for us, and we all got into the elevator together. Luckily for us, Mr. Harrington was able to reserve a mini-tour just for our group, and the lady who would be showing us around seemed really excited. So excited, in fact, that she almost looked dead with her glossy expression!
"Hey, Mr. Harrington," Flash said, "can I be the first to tell Peter he's expelled?"
The metal doors shut on us, as Mr. Harrington explained to Flash that he had no control over what would happen to Peter. The worst case scenario was yeah, Peter would be expelled. The least that could happen was that he would be given a semi-angry shake of a head, saying he had a reasonable excuse. It would have sucked to not have Peter at Midtown anymore, but he did it to himself!
"The Washington Monument is 555 feet, 5 and 1/8 inches tall," the Tour Guide said in a stale voice. "Notice how the marble and granite are cut around the stone."
I smelled burning coming from near Ned. A pocket from his backpack was glowing a bright blue, slightly smoking. I was going to ask Ned what was wrong with his bag, but the light grew in size. It beamed out of his backpack, burning a hole into the elevator roof.
The elevator shook, and the Tour Guide actually looked concerned. Liz forced herself to smile, as she stared at the hole in the ceiling. I wished I knew more about what was actually happening, so I could help somehow.
"Just stay calm, everyone!" Liz said.
"Oh God, we are all going to die here!" Abe panicked.
"With that attitude you might!" I said, trying to sound optimistic. "As long as we're careful not to cause even more structural damage, we should be fine. Right, Mr. Harrington?"
The teacher didn't answer.
"We're freaking screwed," Charles wailed.
The tour guide got a grip of herself, and said: "Okay guys, I know that was scary, but our safety systems are working."
And what would those do? Did they have a giant mattress underneath us if we fell? (Actually, that sounded pretty awesome.) If our elevator did descend, I could stop it from falling, but would we survive that sudden stop?
