I was able to answer one science-related question. I felt like I knew most of the answers after they were said, but my mind kept flaking out whenever the timer started. It was so stressful in the stage lights with everyone wanting to win. Even Flash looked scared.
"How many U.S. embassies are in the African state of Grenada?"
What was the U.S. again?
Everyone was quiet, not wanting to risk answering it wrong.
"The next correct answer wins the championship," the Moderator reminded us.
MJ, out of the corner of my eye, lightly pressed her button, and everyone looked at her. She didn't seem fazed by the pressure at all, and leaned over towards her microphone when the Moderator gave her the floor.
"Zero," MJ answered.
The moderator was quiet for a long moment, before saying: "That is correct. Midtown takes the championship!"
Our side of the stage screamed, and I stood up to go hug MJ. Of course, she didn't hug back, because she was MJ, but she did pat my shoulder awkwardly. Our team cheered, and the Moderator had to yell for people to force us off of the stage because we were getting too excited.
Mr. Harrington brought us the trophy, and told us we could cheer while leaving the stage.
"Let's go to the monument!" Harrington said, pushing our excited crowd out the doors. "Yay! Let's go!" he cheered a bit dryly.
"(Y/N), gou should get everyone to do The Cheer™," Liz told me as we all walked outside.
I gave her a thumbs-up, and cupped my hands around my mouth. Of course I knew The Cheer™. It was beloved by every Midtown Tech student, because our teachers would threaten us with detention if we didn't do it! Plus, our team were good sports, and Liz knew it would work.
"MIDTOWN TECH, WHAT DID WE DO?" I yelled.
"WE JUST KILLED IT, HOW 'BOUT YOU?" The group responded loudly.
"I'M HERE TO ROCK."
"WE'RE HERE TO ROCK."
"I'M HERE TO ROLL."
"WE'RE HERE TO ROLL."
"LET'S GOOOOOOOO, MIDTOWN!" We all cheered together.
Liz patted me on the back, and went to catch up with Mr. Harrington in the front.
"We won!" Kara cheered, pumping her fist into the air.
"You guys, I am so proud of you," Liz said, beaming.
"Told you we didn't need Peter," Flash said smugly.
Ned just sighed, and told him: "Flash, you didn't answer a single question."
We were all planning to go inside the monument, if you excluded MJ, who said she didn't respect the fact that it was made by slaves. I totally understood, but I still wanted to go inside, because if my friends jumped off of a cliff, I totally would, too! Plus, Abe was doing a really funny/stupid song he made up on the spot as he marched inside, which I definitely wanted to see the end of.
I waved to MJ as I ran inside, catching up with Ned. He was on the phone with someone, which I began to think was odd, until it hit me who he was talking to. Ned was trying to whisper into the phone while walking towards the security lady, which seemed stupid. If he wanted to continue the conversation, he would have to stay at the entrance!
"Don't worry, it's safe," I heard Ned say. "It's in my backpack."
"That's Peter, isn't it?" I said, grabbing the phone from him. I put it up to my ear, and as politely as possible, I said: "You missed the fucking Decathlon, you dum-dum!"
