Rude Awakening

Long ago the people of the Earth lived in harmony. The Mages, magic folk, of North and South America, the Neos, the technologically advanced, in Asia, the Stagnates across Europe, the Rogues, hidden in mountains all across the world, the Flyers, aviators, soaring through the sky, and the brutish Scorned in Africa. The six tribes vowed to keep the peace but as years passed and leaders died, many people's views began to change. The people of the Scorn began to believe that the Stagnates, those without gifts, weren't really people and are more like animals. As their tribe grew, their ruler, Zanya, changed their name. And thus the Colossus was born.

And now it's my time to fight.

"Mael? Mael-Rae!" The shouts of my father bounce around my room. I sit up and yawn. I swing my legs to the left of my bed. I throw open my door and give my father the dirtiest look I can throw. He is dressed up in his old suit of armor and holding a short sword.

"Not to be rude, but why did you wake me up?"

"Today, Mael, is your last day of training." I grin.

"Really?" He nods. "Yes!" I shut the door and dash to my closet and change into a grey tunic and brown pants. I sit on my bed and lace up my boots. "Dimittetis." I say the incantation and snap my fingers. I appear in the courtyard with my dad standing a couple feet away. He turns to me and smiles.

"You've grown up so fast." He rubs my head and pulls me to his chest. "It feels like just yesterday you performed your first spell." Of course that's the milestone he wants to focus on. Ever since the war started that's all he cares about, even though he says that everything is under control. I know the only reason he wanted to train me was to put me in his army. I know he's the King of Mages but he's still my father.

"Today, we're learning my least favorite spell, necare."

"To kill? But I'm not going to murder anyone. "

"Maybe not, but it's still good to know." He sighs, I can tell he's tired, this war has taken a toll on him and I want to help but I don't think I belong in an army.

"First put your hands up, then-"

"My King!" Someone shouts at us from a cross the courtyard. A man in a shiny grey suit of armor meets us in the center.

"What is it, Ronald?" The King asks the knight. I search my father's face and all is see is the battle hardened man that roamed my childhood.

"A Neo man has arrived at the palace." He gulps, "He says the Colossus has... made a move."

My father looks at me, tears in his eyes. "Mael-Rae, your time has come."
