You couldn't believe your eyes, watching about as you hiked up with the party of people you had met recently. The sun was just barely peaking over the mountain as if to shyly say hello.
You smile at the thought of a beautiful campsite, a warm fire, and soft snow crumbling under your shoes.
It was December, Christmas was just around the corner. You usually went camping with the same three friends every year. But they were busy, so you joined up with others you hardly knew.
You marched through the freshly fallen snow, it was beautiful out, the snow giving everything a soft, white glow around dead branches and bushes. Now and then you noticed white rabbits poking their heads out to watch you.
As you trudged through some thicker snow, you stumbled over a log you hadn't seen through the snow, and slid down a hill, the others in the party asked if you were alright. You stood, and noticed something not too far off. Wiping the snow from your face it wasn't there anymore. You must've seen a deer or elk or something.
You made your way back up the hill to continue along the trail. You decide to tell the others you were going to run ahead to find a nice clearing, they agreed as long as you took a flare gun, with two coloured flares. Red was something was wrong, and Blue was you found a place to camp.
You nod. Taking both the flares along with your flare gun. You trudge ahead, feeling your way through the snow with a hiking stick.
You made quite a good distance, just as the sun was reaching its highest peak you found a decent area and marked it with a few orange flags.
You continued along to see if you could find anything else decently wide open.
Just as the sun was beginning to turn the sky pale shades of red and purples, pinks, you noticed a beautiful area. A frozen waterfall, and small pond, frozen over with thick ice. The area next to it was large, and clear. You ready to shoot the flare. Taking the blue one out, readying the flaregun. You got a sick feeling in your stomach but thought nothing of it as you aimed the flare in a certain degree. As soon as you shot off the flare the sun began to set. The blue light dancing along the frozen wonderland. You heard something not too far away. Thinking nothing of it, you began to set up your tent near the frozen water, finding it a gorgeous area. Suddenly you watch as the sky lights up red, a S.O.S. flare. You watch as it comes from where you had come from, where the group must be. You knew you were too far off to help, but you grabbed your gear but just as you were beginning to break towards them, movement in front of you made you stop.
A wounded man came through the woods, crazed, in pain, and crying. He fell at your feet. And just as you went to attend him, you looked up to see two ominous, deep yellow orbs glaring at you. Two massive tree trunks, what you thought they were anyway, came through the edge of the forest, very obviously aimed towards you two. You quickly try to pick up the man, letting out a fearful cry as teeth suddenly clamped down on the man's legs. You let go out of fear and stumble away, adrenaline coursing through your body as you reach for your flaregun you must've dropped on the snow and loaded up the red flare, you aimed it at the monster, before aiming it up. The sudden red light blinded you, and the monster. As you looked to where it had gone, massive red scales seemed to catch the light in such a way to make it look like fire. It had retreated. You stayed where you were, blinking your eyes a few times, trying to blink the tears away.
What just happened..?
What was left of the group came tearing through the treeline, terrified. They looked at you and then to the blood splatter, all that was left to their friend.
They looked at you for answers, but you sat down on a log contemplating if what you had seen was real.. No one would believe you if you told them the truth. So you just said, "Bear.."
