"She has about a few hours left. You should all say your goodbye's." The doctor said to my family as we sit next to the door of my grandmother's hospital room. My heart shattered into a million tiny pieces. She had been in and out of the hospital for the past three years, but this time she wouldn't be leaving. This was the day we had all knew would be coming. The doctor walked away and my family stood up and walked into the room. They all said the same things. 'It's okay if you leave us.' 'You can rest now.' 'Thanks for the good times.' and my personal favorite 'We'll miss you so much.' The 97-year-old woman weakly smiled at us and she reached for my hand. I quietly and gently held her frail hand and tried to smile at her but all I could do was cry. My body wouldn't do anything except let the tears fall.
"It's okay dear. You don't have to worry about me anymore." She said in a hushed voice. I slowly nodded and tried to stop crying but I couldn't. My father ushered the others out of the room as if he knew she wanted to talk to me alone. She smiled as the others walked out knowing that was the last time she would see her grandkids and son. I sat down as the door clicked shut.
"Why do you have to go?" I asked her in a shaky voice.
"Because that's how life works my dear. We are like waves, we form and grow as we get closer to crashing and breaking on the shore." She said in a near whisper. I nodded and wiped my tear stained cheeks with my free hand. "I need to tell you something, Kyra."
"What is it?" She motioned for me to come closer. I leaned close to her and she whispered something in my ear. When she was done talking I nodded and sat back down.
"Tell your father he was always my favorite." She smiled and closed her eyes. The monitor let out a long beep and I let out a loud sob. Why did it have to be her? She was the nicest woman alive! And now I had lost my crying shoulder, my listening ear, and my best friend. I squeezed her hand as if that would bring her back. Shaky sobs fell off my lips and hot tears streamed down my face.
"Wake up! Please wake up!" I said between sobs. My dad came in followed by a team of doctors. I looked at the main doctor. "You said she had a few hours! Why did you lie?!" I shouted at her.
"I'm very sorry for your loss." She said in a quiet voice. I was about to shout something at her again but my dad pulled me out of the room. When he stopped moving, I fell into him and hit his chest.
"Why did they lie?" I asked as the tears fell. He stood there, quiet and holding me up.
