She blew out a breath through her nose in resignation. When Roku went through enough trouble to specify what he wanted her to do there it wasn’t worth trying to dodge him. Last time she had a guy had shown up at her apartment and that hadn’t been particularly fun for anyone involved. Her eyebrows dipped. But if she thought about it  this was the first for him wanting to talk to her during his ‘mingling’ time.

She straightened to head up only to have a hand catch her arm and pull her back. She stiffened violently. Everyone around here knew how she hated being touched. Her gaze snapped to Bruces who was looking abnormally agitated.

“Look,” he started. Hesitated. “Just be careful up there. Lot’s of bad news in those walls.”

“Bad news” was a nice way of putting it. To be completely honest Rebecca wouldn’t be surprised if half the clientele admitted to the Cage was part of a mob or something. Taking note of the severity of the situation she was going to be in for Bruce to have warned her, she nodded.

“Thanks.”

He released her and she turned and threaded her way through the crowd towards the door leading up to one of the Towers that would lead her to the upper level and she’d have to be let in from there. The Flame was a cool set up, but not really time efficient when getting around.

“Coat?” a man asked as soon as she entered.

Her answer was to give him an arched eyebrow. She always wore her coat, inside or outside. It was stupidity at its greatest if the man actually believed she’d hand it over just because she had entered the VIP zone.

The man seemed to grind his teeth together and gestured out over at the serving girls who were strutting around with duplicates of the shirt she wore under her coat. “Coat, miss?” he repeated.

Was he trying to make a point?

“No thanks.” Rebecca stated drolly. The shirt was a midriff, sleeveless and the back consisted of artfully sewn straps that concealed next to nothing. She tried to conceal her scars not show them off. In fact, the only conservative part of the short was the kimono style collar and that barely hid His bite marks.

Before she could push passed him into the room strong hand lowered onto her shoulders and the only thing that stopped her from flinging whoever it was over her shoulder was her bosses voice. “Now Rebecca, the mans just doing his job, why don’t you…indulge him?” he drawled. His breath stirred her hair and she pressed her lips together in a tight line.

Fine. If the boss wanted her to scare off clientele so be it.

She shrugged off his hold with a deliberately over exaggerated movement before whipping the coat off and tossing it at the man who scrambled to catch it in time. “If I find anything missing from there…” she said, trailing off to let his imagination do the work.

Roku chuckled. “Leave Sameson alone, he’s not going to do any digging.” he assured her. “That’s why he’s up here after all.”

“And why am I up here?” she asked, getting straight to the point. She took a step forward and turned to face him, annoyance rising fast.

Her employer wasn’t the average Asian guy, that was for sure. Standing at a towering 6’ 2” with ice blue eyes and nearly no accent, the only thing one could use to positively identify him as his race was the straight black hair and that was a stretch. Her eyes took in the fitted no-doubt custom design black suit with fading red accents and his ever present charcoal black cane. If she had seen him on the streets he would look like an ostentatious, slightly eccentric, rich man and nothing else. But of course that wasn’t true. As nice and approachable as Roku’s appearance could be he was a dangerous man.

The famous predatory smile most girls mistook as charming flashed at her. “Patience, Rebecca. Perhaps the room is getting out of hand; after all, you’re one of my best bouncers.”

Just the fact that he was avoiding a straight answer was enough to tell her that wasn’t the case.

“Games don’t amuse me.” she deadpanned, crossing her arms.

His eyes flashed but he threw his head back and laughed. “That,” he said once he calmed down, “Is why I like you. You’re a spit fire, an embodiment of this club. Sarcasm and cutting comments always at your tongue to be used on the next person. And if that doesn’t work,” his eyes trailed over the corded muscles of her arms and stomach, “Well, you’re not one to cry about a few broken nails.”

When she didn’t let off on her heavy stare he tapped his cane on the ground and motioned for a serving girl she knew to be called Roxxy to come over to them.

“How can I help you, Sir?” she inquired, giggling slightly.

“Ah, Roxxy, right? I’d appreciate it if you could go over to the Dragon booth and notify the gentlemen that I’ll be right over with my guest. Oh, and get Rebecca a drink while you’re at it.” he said, pitching his voice over the pulsing music.

As she nodded and walked away Rebecca hissed as his hand firmly clasped the underside of her arm, and he crowded her. “And you, are going to find out why you’re here since you’re so impatient.” His other hand came up and roughly turned her chin towards the exclusive room/booth set up in the center of the room. “You’re going to monitor my guests for a while.”

Angrily, she tossed her head from his grasp and took a step away. “Why don’t you just have Bruce or Taro monitor like you usually do?” she demanded harshly. She was tired of this game. She was tired of his tiptoeing around the subject. And she was fucking tired of him touching her like he had a right to. Normally she was polite and reserved but he was pushing her.

The mans’ lip curled menacingly. “Careful, Rebecca. I might like your fire but when a flame gets out of control it’s in everybody’s best interest that it be tamed.” he warned, voice misguiding smooth.

Her throat threatened to close up as she swallowed down memories. She didn’t want to know how he ‘tamed’.

Satisfied with her silence he straightened his jacket and continued. “Anyways, my guests do not want any bodyguards per say. I do not feel comfortable with that arrangement. Thus your presence is the solution.” he smirked. “All you have to do is act the part of one of the clubs girls and no one will no the difference.”

Gaining her calm back she pointedly glanced at the scars littering her skin. “No one will be suspicious, huh? That’s a new one.”

“Men like the one’s you’re going to sit with tend to like the more…unique women.” he chuckled. “Your little battle scars will be seen as depth of character.”

Okay, this didn’t sound like a regular crowd. Rebecca narrowed her eyes and crossed her arms. “The pay?”

“Pay?” he asked innocently.

“You’re asking me to sit there and be a slab of meat to men, protect you from who knows what, and I’m going to be expected to keep silent about anything being said there I’m assuming.”  she listed off, catching the pursed look of his lips. “That’s more than my usual job, and I expect compensation equal to that-- in addition to my regular pay tonight.”

Bodies ground against each other in the flashing lights of the room as she stared unblinkingly at the taller man. She was unmoving in her conditions. They were nonnegotionable. If he wished to, he could find someone else to do the job.

“Five hundred dollars.” he offered, holding up a wad of bills.

She eyed the money and weighed it in her mind. Seemed fair enough. “Done. But that price won’t get me cuddly with the clientele.” she stated. No amount of money would be able to do that.

Roku winked. “Never expected that for a second. Not from you.”

Rebecca snatched the pay and bent to tuck it into her sock. She straightened and shrugged. “Lead the way Boss.”
