The clock ticks. Waiting is drowning my patience. I can hear footsteps, she must be done soon. It seems as if days have gone by. Just a few minutes have. The anticipation makes it seem like more. When the door opens I feel a wave of relief mixed with anxiety. What will the results be?
"Miss Bellton?" The woman asked, addressing me.
"Yes, that's me." I say shakily, now having second thoughts about this whole thing.
"Right this way hun." Her smile released some of my stress, as she motioned for me to follow her back into the room she came out of.
In the strange room, the walls were yellow. That was what I noticed most, being that we were only in there for a short while. The yellow color also released a small amount of stress. That must be their goal. To make people feel good before hearing bad news. I observed what I could about the woman and the strange instruments scattered around. On the woman's name tag, it read: Julie. That's a nice, happy name. Julie pointed at a black stool, and I quickly took it. Having a better angle, I looked around some more. Most of the tools in the room were alien to me, and as I studied them they confused me more and more.
"My name is Julie and I will be your nurse today."
Julie said abruptly. In her eyes I could tell she was hiding something. Just a hint of worry, or was it guilt? I nodded and looked at my feet, not sure what else to do. Julie sat in a chair near the computer and started to type rapidly. She was bringing up my results. My pinky finger tapped rapidly on the side of the stool, telling me I was anxious. My whole life has led up to this moment. Would I be a red; the rarest but the best. Or would I be a blue; my whole family's
color, but not so good. I longed to be blue, if I were red I would have to leave my family. This was the core of my fear and anxiety, 1 in 300 were red. I didn't have much to worry about but that's still all I did all day.
Julie looked up from the computer and smiled at me, more genuinely this time. This confused me a bit. She could be smiling for red or blue. Julie turned towards a strange box with a green light and a slit. It didn't look like anything I'd seen before. She pressed the green light, which now I knew was a button and the box started to make strange noises. A paper came out of the slit after a few seconds of noises and Julie quickly grabbed it. She folded the page and handed it to me.
"Have a nice day Celeste." She said, hinting for me to leave before unfolding it. I did as I was expected.
When I came back into the waiting room, everyone seemed tense. Like they were expecting me to tell them what the paper hid. That was only mine. I left quickly, their looks making me feel anxious to see it myself. What will I be?
