"That's literally why I'm here." He replied, like it was obvious

"And that's why you brought a refill, right?" She asked

"I'll be right back." He groaned, leaving the room when he noticed his hands were empty

"Why don't you three go get something to eat at the cafeteria? I swiped Nurse Wally's ID so you can get 10% off." Penelope said

"Mami, you go. I'll hang out with Abuelita." Alex insisted

Penelope nodded and guided Elena to the door. I pat Alex's shoulder, and then followed after them.

_________

Later, I walked back into Lydia's room with Alex, who was carrying a tray of jello.

"I was talking to the head nurse. She gave me all these treats after I gave her this treat." Alex joked, pointing to his face

"Two can play at that game." Dr. B, who was already in the room, said as he pointed to his face and smiled

"Uh, Excuse me. Three can." I laughed pointing to my face, "And I obviously win."

"I'll just give her money." Dr. B nodded, before walking out

We decided to go eat in the hallway so Elena could spend time with Lydia.

After a couple things of jello split between the two of us, Penelope led as back to Lydia's room where we found Nurse Wally and Elena crying.

"What the hell is going on here?" Penelope asked

"Wally's got a lot of stuff." Elena sniffled, wiping her eyes

"That felt good. I haven't cried since I was six and my rabbit Tupac died. For years, all those tabloid headlines saying Tupac was alive just toyed with my emotions." He sighed

"Hey, I brought some stuff to make it homier for her. I'm gonna need ten minutes." Schneider greeted, walking in with a huge bag, after being gone for almost an hour

"Oh, Yeah, I should probably go anyway. The guy in 404 has been waiting, like, an hour for a sponge bath." Wally noted, before leaving

Penelope, Alex, and Elena left after him.

"Schneider, is it okay if I have two minutes with her? I don't want to take away from the things you brought, but if this is the last time I see her, I'd like to say a few things." I asked, looking at the pale woman in her bed

"Sure, thing kid. I'll be right outside." He nodded, kissing the top of my head and leaving

I went over to Lydia's bed side and slid the chair closer to her, "Hey, Lydia."

She stayed silent, as I expected and I sat for a minute thinking of something to say, "You know, I never got to say goodbye to my parents. When they died, it all happened so quick. And now that you're here...in this hospital... I'm praying it isn't like that again."

I took her frail hand into my own, squeezing it gently as a I tried to hold back the tears threatening to spill

"Who am I kidding? You're too strong not to get through this. You're probably the strongest woman I know. There's not a day that goes by, that you don't live out who you truly are. I wish I could be like you. I wish I had the strength to tell people how I feel, because right now... I feel terrible."

I looked around at the bare and empty room, feeling nothing but fear and coldness. It must be so lonely to be stuck in a room like this all the time.

"You're family has been with me and Schneider through everything, and I feel like I can't do anything to pay you guys back. I've tried to express in words what you guys mean to me... but there are none. You know, I think I might love you as much as I love Alex."

I laughed for a moment, thinking about how she would have reacted to my last statement had she been awake, "Yeah, yeah. I love Alex. I love him as a best friend... but lately I've felt something more. I know, I know, you've always said we were going to end up together. Maybe you're right. Maybe we would be together if I could get the confidence to tell him, but I'll make a deal with you. If you wake up.... I'll tell Alex how I feel."

I smiled at her, admiring her face for a moment in silence

"Please....wake up." I begged, letting the tears flow, as I kissed her forehead.

A while later, Schneider had gone in to make peace, hoping it wouldn't be the last time he'd see her.

When he was finished, we heard Penelope calling from the hospital room.

We all ran in there to see that Lydia had woken up, "Hello."

We all laughed as I hugged Schneider, full of relief

_________

A couple days later, we were at the citizenship ceremony for Lydia and Schneider.

We stood behind them as we waited for Lydia's name to be called, "Lydia Margarita Del Carmen Inclan Maribona Leytevidal de Riera."

We cheered loudly as she went up there to get her certificate and flag. We began to sing for her as she came back to us.

"There are more people." The lady interrupted us

We all held our hands up in surrender, and went back to our spots.

"Hey, Aria." Alex whispered, tapping my shoulder

"Mhm?" I asked, facing forward but listening to him at the same time

"I heard." He admitted

"Heard what?" I asked, still paying attention to the front

"What you said to Lydia in the hospital." He finished

I felt my heart stop in my chest, and my head snapped to look at him.
