So... this is a short story I wrote a few years ago but I decided to rewrite it and post it.
Dark clouds rolled by overhead like bruises on the once beautiful skin of the sky. There wasn't a single noise, as if no one dared to disturb the oncoming legion of sound and light. A small child skipped through the vast crowd of grass, ignoring the tiny arms attempting to hold her back from the impending doom.
She ran on, her ginger hair flowing behind her, her giggles ripping through the silence. She suddenly stopped, listening for the familiar sounds of the meadow but all she could hear were the distant calls from her mother to come inside and seek refuge from the battle upon them. The hairs on her arms stood on end, a warning sign. The storm was here. She gasped as a bright bolt of light crashed into the ground near her. Frozen in awe, she watched the heavens as they roared out their battle cries.
There's another flash but this time, a scream rings out too. The girl falls to the ground, her eyes closed and her body jolting in pain. Her mother picked her up, ignoring her boiling hot skin and sprinting as fast as she could towards the farmhouse.

A girl gasped as she sat up, she examined her surroundings anxiously. She was in a soft bed, four walls stood around her, covered in pictures. She got up slowly and shakily, trudging towards the large collage of memories. She saw a small child in the majority of the photos. It was her.
She stumbled towards the mirror and gasped at what she saw. There stood a much taller girl with the same red hair and blue eyes as herself. She even had the same birthmark on her shoulder, a bird. This couldn't be happening.
She slowly made her way through to the large living room, letting out a strangled sob as her eyes focused on something. 'Mother!' she cried, shaking the limp body of the woman who had cared for her all her life. She went to hold her hand but found a piece of paper crumpled in her fist. The girl took the letter into her violently shaking hands and began to read it.
My darling Emyleah,
When you were 6, you were struck by lightening. The doctors did everything they could to save you and so here you are, awake after a 10 year coma. They told us that the injury had destroyed a gland in your neck and you may not survive without it. A few years ago, a disease broke out; it has taken nearly all of the population. I am writing this so that you know what has happened. I want you to know you must be confused, but don't be scared.
With all of my love,
Mother.
She curled up into a ball next to her dead mother, taking in her appearance. Her once tanned skin was as white as the paper in her hand and her lips were blue. There was a small mark on her neck where the veins were black and the skin around it was icy blue. A tear, her final one, had become a tiny bead of ice on her pale cheek. The girl now cried silent tears as she collapsed onto the floor. What happens now?
