Summer 1983
August 14th
All was calm and quiet at Whizzer and Marvin's apartment. Probably because Whizzer wasn't in, but still.
Jason was sound asleep in his room, probably dreaming of girls and football and whatever straight boys dream about. It was a Saturday, the second to last one of the summer holiday, so Jason was round Marvin's for the weekend. It was always better when Jason stayed round. Marvin had an excuse to cook, a hobby he actually found rather enjoyable, instead of eating take-out like he and Whizzer did on the weekdays. Whizzer also loved Jason's company; he would spoil him like crazy- get him new gadgets, magazines and what not- and they would watch the baseball game if it was on. Marvin hated baseball. But then again, it was the reason he and Whizzer got back together.
Marvin was in the kitchen, preparing the Sunday roast, one of Jason's favourite meals. Whizzer was out shopping for the groceries, but no doubt he'd come back with a little treat for each of them. Maybe a new Walkman for Jason, a men's fashion magazine for himself and for Marvin some new clothes since he was constantly complaining about how bland and boring Marvin's clothes were. Typical Whizzer.
This was the Sunday routine. Jason could sleep in and catch a break from Trina, Whizzer could shop his heart out and Marvin could cook and think.
Marvin cooking. Ha. 4 years ago, the words "Marvin" and "cooking" would never be used in the same sentence unless it was for a list of things Marvin would never do. Marvin chuckled softly to himself, chopping the carrots and placing them in a pot. I guess that's what happens after 2 years of self- reflection. Maybe his and Whizzer's break up was a blessing in disguise.
All of a sudden, a key turned in the lock of the front door. At the same time, Jason came bounding from his room into the hallway, sleepy eyed and yawning. Whizzer's head poked round from the door, beaming. He held up four bags filled to the brim with interesting things. You could ask Whizzer to go fetch a carton of milk and he'd come back with bleach, a buggy and 6 bars of chocolate. Not that Jason was complaining
"Whizzer!" Jason took a bag and hygged the one of many dads he had.
"Hey, Jason! Look inside the bag, there's a suprise!" Jason ran off into the living room with the bag.
Marvin walked out into the hallway. He was wearing the hot pink apron Whizzer bought for him on his last shopping trip. In black were the words "Hello, is it me you're cooking for?" Marvin loved a good pun.
"Hey, Whiz."
"Hey, Marvie," Whizzer bent down slightly and planted a kiss on Marvin's head. "Hm. Still short."
"Oh c'mon, Whiz, you were gone for 20 minutes!" Marvin laughed and pulled Whizzer closer.
"Yeah, plenty of time to grow. All I ask for is maybe an e--" Marvin shut up him up with a kiss. Afterwards, Whizzer sighed. "Fine, I forgive you."
Whizzer placed the bags on the kitchen table and rummaged through them.
"Okay, Marv, you totally have to try this on. It's stylish and it's your size!" Whizzer waved the red shirt with an expecting look.
Turning back to Whizzer, Marvin sighed. "You know, you don't have to take it on yourself to buy me clothes. I'm perfectly capable."
"No you are definitely not. Marv, I love you but a cow has better style than you, come on."
Just then, Jason ran back into the room, clutching a large, black box.
"A NEW WALKMAN! THANKS, WHIZZER!"
"No problem, dude. Also, the flowers, the card and the blue and grey box is for Trina and Mendel, okay? Could you please give it to them tomorrow?"
Jason shrugged, mesmerised by his new toy. "Uh-huh."
Marvin whipped around, nervous. "Why? What's the flowers and gift for?"
"Just they're meetiversary. Hey, why don't you ever buy me anything for our meetiversary?" Whizzer narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms. It was always a joke if he crossed his arms.
"I don't know. Is it that much of a big deal?"
Whizzer faked hurt and clutched at his heart dramatically. "Well, if you call finding the love of your life a "big deal", then yeah, it kind of is!"
"Okay, I'm sorry! When is our meetiversary, anyway?"
"Well last year, my sister died a day later, so...... March 15th."
"Tell you what, next year, we'll celebrate. I'll take you out on a date--"
"Yeah?" Whizzer shuffled closer to Marvin.
"--We'll go to your favourite restaurant--"
"Yeah?"
"--We'll do whatever you want."
"Oh yeah? Anything?" They were as close as close could get. Smirking, Whizzer traced Marvin's shoulder with his fore fingers. Marvin bit his lip, but couldn't fight back a grin.
"Anything."
"I like the sound of that..."
"Er, Dads, I think the potatoes are boiling..."
At that, Whizzer and Marvin looked up and rushed over to the stove, where bubbles were forming and frothing and trying to escape the pot. Marvin and Whizzer rushed around each other panicking, but laughing, as Jason watched on, giggling too.
Just a usual Sunday at Marvin and Whizzer's.
