It's been three years since my mother and I moved into the small town of Charlotte ville. After her divorce from my father she decided that she needed to start afresh in a new town where nobody knew her. To be honest, I wasn't so shocked when my parents pulled me aside and told me they were getting divorced. My father cheated on my mother all through their ten years marriage. I would often catch my mum in tears when I was a child and she would make some excuse saying she got something in her but as I got older she ran out of excuses and noticed that I had already caught on to my fathers cheating ways. I guess my mother had had enough of being mistreated and disrespected by my father that she ended up pulling the plug on their marriage.
Now looking at my mother humming to her favorite song on the radio while she drives me to school I see why she took that step. Every since the divorce she took full control of her life in order to show me that she Is a strong woman and can survive without a man in her life. I admired my mother for her strength and her ability to bounce back. After her divorce, she went back yo nursing school and got her degree in nursing, soon after graduating she applied a job in Henley Hospital and got hired.
Since our move here, I've helped in anyway possible with the finance's in our home even though knowing my mum made enough for the both of us and my father still supported me financially. Even though things ended badly between both my parents, my father never mistreated me as his daughter. In fact I got all the love can get from her father and even now he was still my best friend. Id concluded that both of them were just not meant for each other.
Looking back at my mum as she passes through a green light I can't help but smile at her. She is wearing her scrubs and has her afro up in a bun and minimal make up on. I swear I never thought I would ever see in her such a state of peace and happiness. I reach up to turn up our current favourite song blasting through the radio speakers, her smile widens as I join her to sing Bruno Mars ft Cardi B- please me. I know it might not be an appropriate song for a mother to sing along with her daughter, my mother and I had such a open honest relationship were I could talk to her about anything.
A few minutes later she pulls up to my high school and I dread even stepping out of the car.
"Honey, il be covering Melissa's shift today so I'll be home late. I left some money on the kitchen counter order pizza or whatever you feel like eating", she tells this as I unbuckle my sit belt and get off the car
" OK mother ", I roll my eyes and give a kiss on the cheek.
" oh honey, its been three years now, I still can't believe you still hate this school that much", she says to me as she makes a puppy face
"I know, I know." I answer her back and roll my eyes at her as I close the door behind me, "I'm just glad its my final year in this stupid school. See you later mother." I walk away cutting our conversation short, she drives away as I turn and face the main entrance of this stupid hell hole I call a school.
I hated my school, it was full of self entitled rich kids who had no problem putting down another person. On the first week of my transferring here I had gone through the worst racist remarks. It was as if some of the students in my school were meeting a black kid fro the first time in their lives, they would often say the most ignorant things about my curly hair my caramel colored skin tone. At first their comments hurt me but as time went they started having no effect on me as I blocked them out.
Taking in a deep breath I step on the curb and start making my way towards the school entrance. I spot my friends Alex and Molly waiting for me by the entrance.
"Hey Masika, over here", molly shouts out and begins to jump up and down as soon as she sees me
I can't help but smile at my energetic friend. Alex just stands their rolling his eyes trying to calm Molly. " omg molly, its only eight in the morning, where are you getting all this energy from?"
