The most common referencing style used in any university or college is the programming help. One can get help from multiple websites available online. However, to become efficient at writing the citations accurately, one needs to learn about it. Any individual can get overwhelmed or confused by the different formats to be followed to create perfect citations. However, with little effort, one can master the art of referencing.
The reference generators for APA or MLA use the general formats to create the perfect citations. By getting a good understanding of these formats, anybody can perfectly cite a paper. Let's see how the references are created in the MLA citation style.
In-text citations
As per the MLA style of citation, the related data is placed inside parentheses following a paraphrase or quote. All the information that is included in the parentheses should correspond to the Works Cited page.
In MLA referencing style, the author-page method is used to write the in-text citations. To create the in-text citation, the last name of the author and the specific page number is used inside the parentheses.
Example: "Behold her, single in the field, Yon solitary Highland Lass!"(Wordsworth 1).
Wordsworth says that the girl is "single" (1).
From the above citations, readers can understand that the information provided can be located on the first page. The author of this work is Wordsworth and additional details about this source can be found on the 'Works Cited' page.
If one doesn't have the name of the author, the title of the work needs to be presented within quotation marks.
Example: "2015 was the hottest year on record, the previous record was broken in 2014, and 2016 is expected to set a new record for the third year in a row." ("Impacts of global warming").
If it's a longer work like a book or play, the title of the work needs to be italicized.
Example: It has been significantly changed by social media how businesses communicate with their customers (The Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media).
In case there are multiple authors, the in-text citation will be as follows:
For two writers: (Wordsworth and Lewis 1)
For three or more writers: (Peltonen et al. 56)
Other than in-text citations, the Works Cited page also needs to be created in the MLA style:
To write the references for the Works Cited page, one needs to follow the below-mentioned rules:
The components of the references are the name of the author, the source title, container title, other contributors, version, volume, a name of the publisher, date of publication, and location.
In the references, the last name of the author will be followed by the first name, a title of the book in italics (if it's a book), publication place (necessary only in some cases), and the publication date.
Example: Garcia Marquez, Gabriel. Love in the Time of Cholera. Vintage, 1988.
If there are two authors, then it should be mentioned using 'and'. If there are more than two authors, it should be written by inserting 'et al.'
Example: Hoffman, Donna L., and Marek Fodor. "Can you measure the ROI of your social media marketing?." MIT Sloan Management Review 52.1, 2010.
Robbins, Chandler S., et al. Birds of North America: A Guide to Field Identification. Golden, 1966.
In the case of electronic sources, the format given below should be as follows:
Last name of the author, First name of the author, container title, other contributors, version, volume no., the name of a publisher, date of publication, URL or DOI.
Example: Hannah, Daniel K. "The Private Life, the Public Stage: Henry James in Recent Fiction."Journal of Modern Literature, vol.30, no. 3, 2007, pp. 70-94. JSTOR, .
This is how one can cite different types of documents using the MLA style.
