"Hi sweetie."

"Hi baby."

"How was the appointment?"

"It's a girl."

"It was meant to be."

"No, baby."

"Does it hurt?"

"I don't feel much."

"Good."

"Tell our baby to play games. It's ok to have fun. Tell her I never wanted to leave her."

"I will."

"And tell Jules,"

"I'm here."

"Tell her to see... tell her to see."

"And tell Gus... swing away."

-

I wake up with a headache and heartburn.

The heartburn is from the baby, the headache is the same nightmare playing repeatedly in my head like a broken record.

I take some aspirin for my head and slowly get ready for the day.

After watching Walk The Line six times straight, I throw on a long sleeved red dress with tights and make it out to the car by 6:30 P.M.

I begin to drive to the Lassiters' when suddenly a squirrel darts in front of me and I quickly swerve around it just missing the squirrel and another car.

I sigh with relief and soon arrive at the Lassiters house.

Where Shawn grew up.

-

I ring the door bell.

The front steps are so slippery that I have to grasp the door handle to keep from slipping.

Maybe it would be better if I did.

Soon, Gus answers the door and gives a small smile when he sees me.

When the door opens, the handle slips out of my hand and I fall. Luckily, Gus dives for me and catches my before I can hit the icy porch.

"Thanks." I say shakily as I make it inside.

"Slippery out there." He says and I nod in reply.

My heart suddenly flutters with something I don't want to feel.

My mind wonders back to when I almost killed my baby.

My baby girl.

The day of the funeral.

Shawn's funeral....

-

I shake my mind and walk into the living room.

Marlowe and Lassiter greet me. Chief Vick squeezes my hand and pulls me into the kitchen.

-

For five hours I am surrounded by cheeriness, warmth, and comfort.

I almost cry because I miss it.

I miss the happiness.

-

Soon the countdown begins and everyone is screaming

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

Karen embraces me in a hug and laughs. Her husband kisses my hand.

Lassiter pats my shoulder and Marlowe giggles with joy as she squeezes my shoulders. Lily laughs and pulls Marlowe's hair. Henry hugs me too. And Gus lifts me up and spins me around. Our eyes meet and suddenly I forget about everything.

I forget about Shawn.

I forget about my baby.

And our faces move closer.

So close.

I can hear my heart boom in my ears.

He comes closer and I try to remember why I'm here. I turn my head at the last and kiss him on the cheek.

"Happy new year." I say and pull away.
