I woke up to the feeling of my smart watch aggressively vibrating against my wrist. My eyes tore themselves open, squinting against the harsh sunlight steaming through my window.
My bedroom was a small square. It was decorated with anime posters and stickers. My tiny bed was carelessly shoved up against the wall under my obnoxiously big window. I had a little vanity in the corner of my room that was littered with homework and sketch supplies.
It was dead quiet, as usual. It's not like I knew any other sound besides the silence. Silence was the only "noise" I've ever heard.
I squeezed the button on the side of my watch to shut off the alarm. With exaggerated slowness, I dragged myself out of my bed.
My bare feet tapped lightly against the wooden floorboards as I moved to sit down at my vanity.
I start at my reflection for a moment.
I wouldn't call myself unattractive.. My platinum blonde hair was sticking out in random directions ; but I mean, I literally his rolled out of bed. My face was splashed with a butt load of freckles that focused around my rosy cheeks. I had a blue left eye and a Brown right eye - it was my favorite thing about me.
Taming my wild hair was close to impossible. After a futile attempt at flattening it with water, I gave up and shuffled over to my micro closet.
Today was Saturday, so I overlooked my school uniform and searched for something more colorful.
I glanced at my appearance in the long mirror on my closet door. Today I wanted to be comfortable, so I had put on a vibrant red hoodie and ripped black jeans with some old sneakers that were laying around.
My mother always joked about how I took longer than a girl to decide on an outfit. I'll admit, I tend to go a bit overboard. Though I'm not a narcissist.. I just care about my image.. It's how I make up for my deafness in a way.
My chirpy mood was now ruined. Way to go me.
As I stepped out of my room to join my parents at breakfast, my face contorted into the cheerful mask I wore everyday. The Fin everybody else saw was what I wished I could be like.
I chuckled bitterly before putting my facade back up and sauntering into the dining room.
My brows raised when I saw no food on the table.
Mom noticed my expression and laughed, her face brightening up. Of course, I couldn't hear the laugh.
Mother was a beautiful woman. Her dark brown curls fell loosely around her shoulders like a waterfall of chocolate. I inherited my freckles from her.
My father was fairly good-looking for his age. He has a blonde beard that matches his golden locks ; though streaks of silver ran through it now. He had round glasses perched on the end of his nose.
My mother spoke to me using leisurely sign language. ' We ran out of groceries. Do you mind running to the store for me? ' She gave me a hopeful smile that stabbed me right in the heart. Damn, she could be pretty manipulative when she wanted.
I rolled my eyes, sighing dramatically - milking it a bit.
' Oh, of course my Queen! ' I flared out the signs and dragged it out for more emphasis ; basically sarcasm. My nose was wrinkled and eyes mocking.
I saw my dad chuckle in my peripheral vision.
Mother laughed again, waving me off. She told me she'd pay me back when I got home.
Making sure I grabbed a notepad and pen on my way out, I left.
A deaf kid living in New Orleans was probably the most ridiculous thing ever.
As I walked down the crowded sidewalk , I passed several people playing music. I loved music. Despite my disability, I was able to feel the vibrations of the bass and beat of the songs. It was better when I was barefoot, though.
New Orleans was like a smaller and dirtier New York. But it was much, MUCH wilder.
The air was always stuffed with the aroma of delicious food, but it was overlapped by the stench of the sewers half of the time.
Speaking of food... I was pretty Damn hungry.
-----------------------------------------------------
I scanned the isles of food, grabbing things I figured we were out of. My stomach refused to leave me alone, because it kept growling and clenching painfully. I didn't actually hear it gurgling, but it wasn't hard to feel it. Shopping for food when I didn't have breakfast wasn't helping my whiney belly either.
A screech bubbles up to my lips when somebody suddenly tapped my shoulder. I whipped around to face a surprised boy around my age.
The guy was taller than me, that's for sure. I only came up to his shoulder. His hair was wavy and black, though the first thing I noticed were his electric blue eyes. He had a defined jawline and a perfectly slanted nose.
I immediately pinned him as a dick-headed jock or something. Nobody was ever good looking and nice.
His lips moved.
Of course I didn't have any idea of what he said.
The boy's expression was confused, and his brows were creased in concern.
Slowly, I used my hands to say ' Do you need something? ' I mouthed the words as I did so.
He stared at me, completely dumbfounded.
I rolled my eyes and signed, ' sorry, but I'm deaf. '
The boy blinked, still not understanding.
A bit exasperated , I dumbed it down for him. Instead of using proper sign language I pointed to my ear then made a cutting motion across my throat.
I stared at him pointedly as realization dawned on his annoyingly perfect features.
This was going to be annoying.
A\N : I'm pretty proud of I do say so myself. 1019 words in the amount of time it took me to write this is a new record for me. Lol. I'm having so much fun writing this and I hope you enjoy it! :D
