The wind was howling and the rain was pounding against the window violently. It was late into the night and Betty was still working. The lab was eerily quiet as she injected Patient 44A. The other 43 had not survived. She had been working day and night for this "cure" to work. The patient convulsed and she jumped back. Soon the heart monitor read flatlining. She started compressions but realized it wasn't going to work. She had lost another patient. She slammed her hand against the table and sobbed out. Every death was hard but after Patient 20A died she became very emotionless. She wasn't sobbing because, of the death it was more out of frustration and disappointment. She sighed and covered the body with the sheet. She typed into her computer 'May 27, 2012. Patient 44A. died at 2:30 AM. Cause: Heart Failure.' She stood and slammed the laptop closed and put it into her purse. She exited the lab grabbing her purse and keys. She headed home to her 17 year old daughter AmyLee at exactly 2:40AM.
Into the early hours of the morning Amy heard the front door slam and heard her mom trudging up the stairs and slam her bedroom door. "Thanks mom. I'm now awake" she mumbled. She rolled over and turned on her phone. She squinted her eyes from the brightness and turned it down. The time read 5am. She sighed and threw her phone next to her. "Why did mom have to slam the doors so damn early?" She half sighed out half mumbled. She rolled over and closed her eyes willing her brain to be lulled asleep again by the rain. Soon her alarm went of at 6AM and she groaned while throwing the blankets off of herself.
