Who Are You?

Cold rain shot up beneath my high-tops as I sprinted mindlessly through the streets. How I could see where I was going out in this violent storm, I had no clue. The sky was almost black and thunder deafened my ears every other second. My heart pounded against my ribs and my lungs screamed for air as I continued to run. Not knowing my destination I paused to frantically scan the area, looking for something unknown to my conscious mind. I realize that I've become surrounded by trees and foliage, having been guided by my own intuition.

"How did I end up in the forest?", I thought to myself, but of course there was no answer.

My feet had a mind of their own, guiding me to some random location. Suddenly, I realized that the rain wasn't as severe underneath the shield of dense forestry. It was almost peaceful hearing the pattering of the downpour but not feeling it. Breathing heavily I walked for a few minutes lost in thought. Coming out of my thoughts, I discovered a break in the trees up ahead.

There was an opening in the roof of branches, as if something quite large had fallen through it. Underneath the opening lied a crumpled figure, covered in broken branches and leaves. The figure was silent, unmoving from its position as though dead. Rain continued to pour on top of them, potentially freezing whatever heat they had left. I made a note to myself that if my instincts hadn't brought me here, the whole thing would have gone unnoticed.

Quietly, I moved myself towards the strange figure. "Hello?", I asked while cautiously approaching them, "Are you okay?".

In the dark I could see that it was a person, or close to one that is. Using the light from my phone, I carefully look them over. Shocked by what I find, I stumble back and fall onto the wet forest floor. Staring in disbelief at the sight before me, I try to quickly regain my senses.

Lying in front of me, alive but unconscious, is a boy with wings as black as a raven's.

Still a little shocked, I notice that he's bleeding, probably from the fall he took. Thoughts of running away disappear completely when I hear him groan in agony. My heart goes out to this strange boy and I finally make up my mind. Wings or not he was injured, and there was no way I was just going to leave him like that. Getting to my feet I quickly take off my over-sized jacket, thankful for once that it's hugeness came in handy. Noticing that he's only wearing a singular piece of cloth, I rush over and gently lay it over him, shielding his damaged body from the harsh rain.

Mind focused solely on saving him, I ignore the fact that his blood is soaking my jacket. "It'll be easy to get out anyway", I think to myself as I asses the situation. As I'm checking his pulse he moves slightly, groaning in pain. Sighing in relief I try to reassure him of his safety.

"Hey, hey, hey, it's okay, it's okay. Just lie still for now, you're hurt real bad.", I tell him, while softly stroking his face to calm him.
"Everything's gonna be alright. Just trust me, okay? Everything is gonna be just fine.", I say gently.

He doesn't open his eyes or even acknowledge that I spoke, but he does stop moving, so hopefully he heard me.
Taking a deep breath I tell him, "I'm gonna pick you up now, okay?".

Though it may not be a good idea to move him, I needed to get him out of the full force of the storm.

Not waiting for an answer, I hook my arms underneath his and carefully drag him to the cover of the trees. When he yelps in sudden pain from being moved I feel a pang of guilt. Thankfully we make it in a matter of seconds and are soon protected from the rain.

"Good thing he's not as heavy as he looks, that could've taken way longer.", I think to myself as I take a moment to breathe.

As I sit next to him and think about what to do next, he suddenly grabs my arm with a surprising amount of strength. Startled, I look and see that his eyes were wide open, filled with fear and pain.
