I sat on the edge of the bed, head in my hands, in the dark. I don't know how I was going to fall asleep tonight knowing I had to deal with Marvin tomorrow. I looked outside the window, I watched a train pass. The train tracks were quite far from my house but I could still see it with the headlights.
Some how I had managed to fall asleep, I awoke resting my head on my arm on my windowsill. I rubbed my eyes and ran my hand through my greasy hair. I got up from my bed and walked over to my bedroom door, feeling slightly dizzy. I walked down the hallway, I heard the radio my dad was probably listening to downstairs, while drinking his coffee and reading The Guardian. I pulled off my boxers and t-shirt and started to run the shower. I didn't feel like a hot shower that was just rewarding, I didn't feel like I deserved hot water, so I ran freezing cold water. I didn't shiver, or wimp. I sucked in the coldness which streamed down my chest. I grabbed the shampoo, rubbing it into my hair.
I now sat in the car on the way to school. I looked in the rear mirror at myself. I may as well have depression written all over my face. My mum hadn't said one word to me this morning, neither did my dad. I guessed they had an argument that morning. The stern look on her face showed both anger and sadness. As my mum parked the car, she half smiled at me and signalled me to get out. I said bye and opened the car door. I walked into the school gates leading the entrance. As I made my way to my form room I noticed people staring at me. 'Do people really think I'm that ugly? Is it possible to look worse than I did yesterday' I thought. I continued to slump my way through the crowded but silent hallways till I reached my form room.
Miss Noel smiled at me as I decided to sit at the front this time, hoping I wouldn't get any trouble from Marvin today. Though I knew that was just wishful thinking. I didn't see Marvin yet. I prayed he wouldn't come in today. I sat down on the seat whilst the girl next to me giving me a horrible look. I raised my eyebrow at her and she turned away. Miss Noel took the register, everyone giving their here's when she called out their names. "Mary" "Here, Miss." "Jacob" "Here." "Marcus" "Here, Miss." I mumbled. She gave me a warm smile and then continued the register. "Marvin?" She paused and no answer came. "MARVIN ARE YOU HERE?" She said loudly. A loud noise came from the back of the class. "Yeah, yeah miss, I'm here!" He called sleepily. I didn't even notice he was here, he must have been sleeping. She sighed. The bell then rang. "Have a nice day!" She called out over everyone's meaningless chatter. I grabbed my bag by the strap and made my way to my first class, Maths.
I hated maths, it was as if I was learning German or something. It made no sense to me and I still didn't get why we needed to learn it in school. I lined up at the back of the line outside the classroom. The hallways fell silent as the teacher hushed us all. He led us into the class, when I noticed Marvin sitting on the middle row, by himself. "Ah, you are Marcus James. Would you like to take a seat next to that young boy over there?" The male teacher startled me as he pointed to the seat right next to Marvin.
My eyes fell on him, smirking. I stood still meanwhile everyone else taking their seats silently. "We will have to start the lesson at some point, Marcus." He snapped, sarcastically. I made my way over to the seat. Just I was about to sit down, Marvin pulled my chair backwards, taking me by surprise and I fell straight on my bum. The class broke out into laughter. People calling out "STUPID NEW BOY!" "I'VE NEVER SEEN SO ONE SO STUPID!" "HE'S SO UGLY" I felt tears prickle in my eyes but I had to stay strong in order to not completely ruin my life. Marvin staring at me, hysterically laughing his head off. I didn't dare look him in the eye, his dark brown eyes were very intimidating.
The lesson began with a boring starter of answering some algebraic questions, obviously I couldn't do them, so i pretended to write stuff down. "Do you know the answer, new boy?" Marvin hissed into my ear. "No." I said keeping my head down on my book. He snatched the book from under me and looked at it. He huffed and chucked it on the floor. I got out of my seat and picked it up. The teachers eye's stared at the computer, not noticing anything. The lesson got more and more boring. He has asked me a question and I didn't know the answer so he sent me out. The bell rang again. I walked in, grabbing my bag and walking back out. "Marcus, come back here." The teacher called. I walked back in with my head dropping. "Marcus, you need to try harder in the lessons, you look completely dead and clueless all the way through." He said. I kept my face neutral and said nothing. "Off you go." He said dismissively.
As I was making my way into the lunch hall after another two lessons of french and history. I noticed a boy in a wheel chair. He was lining up to pay for his lunch when Marvin stepped in front of him and flipped his tray of food into his face. He laughed and ran off with his friends. I ran over to him. His face covered in acne with bolognese sauce and pasta down his shirt and tie. "Are you alright, do you need any help?" I asked. He looked up at me. I took his tray from his lap. He narrowed his eyes at me. "Does it look like need help!" He snapped, grabbing his tray and chucking on the floor, he then wheeled out of the dining hall. I stared onto the floor where the remains of his food lay.
The rest of the day went too slowly but it had reached the end of the day. I saw my mum's car pull up and she beeped at me. I got in the back. "Hi." I said. "Hello sweetheart." She drove off. I looked at my time table for tomorrow. I had swimming for PE. I wonder what Marvin will do next.
