2. Be More "Cool"

Start from the beginning

I sighed and pulled out my laptop. I open a few tabs, a bunch of different social media pages.

What's your goal here? Why do you follow so many people? Do they even know who you are?

          Well, no, but--

          Unfollow them.

          What?

I said to unfollow them. There's nothing more disturbing than some freakshow following you. God, you're so stupid...

You didn't have to rub it in... I sighed once again, scrolling through and unfollowing a lot of people, save for the people he told me to keep following.

Follow the losers still, it'll make it seem like you have some friends. You're going to make second account. It will be your... "Cool" account. That account will be used to follow some popular students from other schools. No worries, I'll be able to set it up to where they follow you back. It will make it seem like you have friends and, when you give students at your school your social media information, it will seem like you were cool in your past school.

Cool in my past school... What? What does that mean?

You think that you're memorable the way that you are now?

There was... A laugh? Honestly, I couldn't tell.

No one, come next year, will remember you. That's why you're going to say you've come from a different school. We'll think of a school later. It all depends on who you follow!

I sigh, listening to the Squip. I make my new accounts, following who he tells me to. After that, and after the Squip's command, I close my laptop and put it back under my bed.

Now, we're going to fix your voice. It's best to start on that early, it should sound normal by the time you return to school.

We spend the next couple of weeks working on my voice, and on my body. Now, I was of average weight, maybe a little less than average, which the Squip said was good. However, the Squip also said I was too weak for my body type, so we had to work on that.

All in all, summer wasn't that bad. Despite my original thoughts, the Squip wasn't that bad. Yeah, he was rude and annoying at times, but still.

          How am I annoying?

By responding to me when I'm not talking to you. Now shush.

I did get a new backpack, along with many new outfits. I also had my hair redone a few days before school started. In all honesty, I was nervous on the first day of school. I didn't want to be bullied again.

And you won't be! Hurry up and get ready, you want to be there early. You aren't cool yet, but you will be. If I am correct, as long as you get there early enough, you should be approached by some of the popular students. Just listen to me and you'll do fine!

With that, I gathered my things and made my way downstairs. I would be walking today. Yeah, I knew how to drive, but I was still on a permit. Dad's car looked like ass, anyway, and it wasn't like I could afford a car of my own.

I sighed, double checking myself as I approached the school. Good posture, look intimidating, etcetera, etcetera.

You're doing good! You still have the same locker, so that's good. Act like you don't know where your classes are. You see that kid over there?

Yeah, of course. That's Jake Dillinger, everyone knows him. He has to be, like, the coolest guy in the school.

And you're going to be second next to him. You're going to become his best friend. Now, go over to him and repeat after me. Greet him by saying "Yo".

I did as he said, walking over to the taller boy. I was nervous, but didn't show it. "Yo," I greeted, just as the Squip instructed.

"Yeah, so, it's, like, my first day here. Could you show me around or some shit like that?"

I repeated his words exactly. Jake studied me for a moment, probably sizing me up, probably determining if I was an easy target or not. After a moment, he smiled. "Sure thing. So, you're new? What's your name?"

"The name's Rich. And, yeah, I'm new. Not really worried, though."

I bet I sounded like a cocky bastard when I said that. God, this wasn't going to work.

To my surprise, he laughed. "Nice meeting you. My name's Jake, and I'm sure you'll do fine here. I'll show you where your classes are quickly, then we can meet up again at lunch. If that's good with you, you can follow me," With that, he started walking off. I followed not too far behind.

He showed me around the school, just kind of chatting with me. I won't lie, it felt nice having someone to talk to. He'd wave to people as we walked, and I'd get smiles from said people.

Maybe being popular wouldn't be such a bad thing after all...

I told you! This guy, Jake, he is going to help you! Between him and all of the girls you will eventually get with, your life will be great!

I know, you've told me. It's just... This is a lot...

The Squip smiled down at me, telling what to say in response to Jake's words. Eventually, the bell rang, and I made my way to my classes. Classes were just fine. I spent time talking with my classmates. They really are nice, when they think that you're cool.

No, Rich, they know that you're cool!

Yeah, I keep on forgetting that. I am cool.

The Squip seemed satisfied with that. I made my way through the day, actually able to walk the halls with purpose. I had a decent following and, as I approach Jake at lunch, I'm greeted by smiles and waves. It feels great being accepted.

Eventually, the bell rings, signifying the end of lunch. I get up, smiling as I grab my bag, waving a goodbye to my friends. As I walk through the halls, though, someone walks into me.

That's one of the losers, Jeremy Heere. Tell him not to touch you, think of some insult.

I turned around, annoyed already by him. It really didn't take much to piss me off. "What the fuck are you doing? Don't touch me, tall ass!"

"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!" The tall Male stuttered. He reminded me of, well, me. Me from last year. He was one of those nerds that would ignore me when I was being bullied, or one of them that would just laugh along with everyone else. Seeing him really posed me off.

I growled, smirking as I shoved him out of my way, into the nearest lockers. But I didn't want to do it, not smile or laugh or walk away. I don't know why I did it. I wanted to turn and walk back to him, giving my apologies and whatnot.

That's not how you become cool, Rich. He is a loser, he is less than you. Yet, here he is, trying to push you around in your school? He deserved what you did to him. He deserves much worse!

No... No he doesn't! He shouldn't have to... He shouldn't have to go through those things!

This is how you become popular, Richard. Trust me.

His tone was intimidating. I sighed, nodding to myself, and went on with my day. Is this what it takes to be "cool"?

          Yes.
