Our gazes unite.
Caught under the spell of the darkness behind the mirror. The world standing still as I peer into it’s hollow eyes, the emptiness bearing down to my core. Chills leap down my spine- my muscles stiffening into stone- my body turns as rigid as a corpse. An eternity seems to go by until the girl finally turns her handheld vanity away.
The monster slips from view and I let out a sign shaken in fear. Nothing I do alone will ever rid me of that horrid creature. Everywhere I turn it’s there staring deeply, intensely with it’s bloodshot eyes judging my entire being from its cage behind the mirror. There’s never an escape not here at school, not at home, and never in this twisted society.
I lift my shaking hand.“ Excuse me Mr. Dakarr I need to use the restroom,” my voice dry from fear.
“If you must, the homework is on page 394,” he said as he let out a long sigh.
My feet pounded beneath me as I slipped out of the school. The Chicago rain poured on me as if someone was dumping buckets of water over my head. The cold rigidness rips me back into reality, the buildings surrounding me are unfamiliar.
“How could I let this happen again, why can I never fight against it,” I said to myself as I escape under the closest storefront awning. Through the glass light glowing a dim but warm hue. The golden letters glistened with the name Sunshine Book Store.
