Moving In

Thomas set his bags down on the floor next to his new bed. "So this is the place, huh?"

The landlord nodded repeatedly. "Yes, yes, this is your apartment, Mr. Thomas. I would just like to thank you again for choosing to stay here, despite the... er... 'incident' a while back. Nobody has agreed to stay here since and it was really putting a-"

"I get it, I get it!" Thomas said, cutting him off. 'This landlord...' The incident he was referring to was a murder that had occurred about 40 years ago (The story taking place in present day 2019. Yikes.) The landlord had put this apartment on the market for a ridiculously low price, and Thomas jumped at the chance. This place was supposed to be haunted, but he wasn't exactly the superstitious type.

"Now, the rent, as you know, is very low, but it still includes bills and internet and all that. The wifi password is..." He listened to the landlord drone on for a while, telling him everything he had already checked out on the advertisement that he set out. Right now, he really just wanted to be alone, nodding absentmindedly to everything he said. Finally, the short man walked out the door, shutting it quietly behind him but secretly rejoicing. It had been ages since he had gotten anyone into that apartment, and this air headed shmuck was exactly what he needed!

Thomas, meanwhile, collapsed on the coach. "Ugh... finally... that guy doesn't shut up..." he mumbled to himself. He took his phone and quickly put in the wifi password, putting his ear buds in and watching some youtube videos. He was so glad to have some time to himself finally, after such a busy day of moving in.

A quiet giggle sounded out in the apartment...

Thomas took an ear bud out, confused. 'Are the walls that thin here? I don't want that to interfere with my computer work... I'll ask the landlord later. I've had enough of that guy for today. It's probably fine.' He put his ear bud back in.

Something watched from above the person,  invisible and smiling quietly to itself. 'I like this person... they're surprisingly funny! That 'landlord' person really doesn't shut up, does he?' It allowed itself another small giggle. 'It's been so long since I've seen another person, much less wanted to, but... he seems different.' The entity made a decision. 'Maybe later today I'll say hello... I really hope he doesn't run off screaming.'

Thomas flopped in his bed, exhausted. Now, don't get him wrong. He was exhausted, yes, but not sleepy. So, as he did often, Thomas took out his phone, which had been charging after he was done with it on the couch, and started to watch more youtube.

"He's a bit of a shut-in..."

Thomas sat up and looked around. 'Is it the walls? I'll complain to the landlord tomorrow. He definitely did not add this on the ad.' He reached over to his endurable, grabbing his ear buds again, wanting to drown whoever was making that noise out. He placed them in and went back to his video.

"Hey. Hey. Hey!" Something said louder. He didn't hear it, his volume up too much. "I'm talking to you, you nerd." No response. It sighed, reaching its hands out.

Something yanked Thomas' ear buds out. "Hey, idiot! I'm talking to you!" He sat up suddenly. A girl... floated in front of him!? A very angry girl, he might add. But that was not what he was concerned about.

"You're... you're f-floating..." He said, his jaw hanging open. He was vaguely worried he was going insane.

"Great observation, idiot. You can see. Sheesh..." The 'girl' floated back, slightly up into the air. "It's about time you noticed me. I've been here for 5 minutes."

"I... Um... I-I'm sorry?" Thomas wasn't handling what he was seeing very well.

The girl stuck her hand out. "I'm Dawn. I used to live here."

He instinctively went to shake her hand, but went pale as his hand simply floated through hers. This was too much. Thomas, shocked and terrified, passed out, his head smacking the headboard.
