"What are you doing back here?" Sonny asks as I waltz into the precinct, still trying to get my hands warm.
The polar vortex hit New York City hard and it's 12 degrees outside tonight, feeling like it's -4. I explain, going over to my chair "the power went out a hour ago at my apartment. No way am I going to freeze to death in that dump."
"Ahh, figured you'd catch up on some paper work while riding out the storm?" He follows up.
I give him a light snarl and snort "catch up on my shows, I'm not working when I'm not getting paid."
"See, that's why you're always behind on your paperwork." He comments back and I can't tell if he's being mean or sarcastic about it. He stands up and comes over towards my desk "come on Y/L/N, I'll even help you get caught up." He puts his out stretched hands on a pile of files and grins.
I sigh, but reluctantly agree "fine, you're taking the Kumar case file though." I make sure to throw the thick papers on top of the small stack he grabbed. After about an hour of working, I push the file away from myself and utter "okay, I'm done. I've had enough"
"You're almost done, hang in there." He tries to encourage me to keep going.
I shake my head "no, no more. I just want to fry my brain." I lean down to my bag and take out the bottle of vodka I brought with me "I'm gonna watch some crappy tv if you'd like to join, Sonny." I place the bottle down on the desk.
He shakes his head "I'm going to finish this file then I'm going to head home. But thanks for the offer." He grins, putting his eyes back on the paper. But 30 minutes later and Sonny has moved his seat next to mine and is watching bad reality TV with me on my laptop. We both chuckle at an absolute stupid and crazy scene and Sonny asks "I can't believe you watch this crap."
I smirk, taking a small swig of the alcohol in my glass "only when I'm trying to turn off everything else around me."
He asks "is everything okay?"
I wave him off "it's fine, it's fine. Come on, you're falling behind." I pour some more vodka into his glass.
He accepts but leans in and whispers "we should take it easy, there's still an officer or two around here somewhere."
I shake my head "nah, no one's stupid enough to stay here in this storm besides you."
He shrugs and chuckles "well, maybe you're right. But at least I don't have to come in early to finish my work. Speaking of.." he finishes his glass while standing "I should head home, it's probably pretty bad out there."
"Have a good night Carisi, thanks for helping and hanging!" I wave and smile, clicking my screen to pull up another episode.
Sonny puts his coat on, putting his hands into his gloves as he walks out. As I'm watching the next episode, Sonny comes back inside 15 minutes or so later "man, it's brutal out there."
"Forget something?" I ask without looking up.
"Nah, but there's no taxi's out and no way can I make it to the subway. Just gonna crash in the cribs tonight." He shakes off the snow from his jacket as he places it back in his chair "could barely get off the block, so much snow is comin' down."
I mumble "you better not snore."
He joins me back at the desk and watches another two episodes of reality tv with me. The power suddenly goes out, and it takes a minute before the back up generators come back on. The generators are old, and only provide enough power for the lights and telephones to work. "You'd think a police station would have better hardwiring." Sonny mentions as the two of us sit in silence now.
