That night I had gotten off work later than usual, and by the time I finally made it home, all I wanted to do was sleep.
When I got home, Anthony was asleep on the couch with the glow of the tv lighting up the room. I sighed, and walked to the kitchen. Our answering machine was blinking red and I glared at Anthony. He couldn't have answered it? I pressed play and then walked to the fridge, looking for something, anything to eat.
"Margo," The answering machine played and I stopped cold. That voice, I'd know it anywhere. I walked over to the machine and continued listening.
"Margo, I hope this is the right number, I called your mom, I didn't know who else to call to find out a way to contact you. Uh, anyways, I'm sorry to be bothering you, but um, Matt died. Matthew Davis, I guess he had cancer for a while and he finally just uh, passed. Anyways, you're invited to his funeral. I know you haven't seen him in forever, but his mom would really love to see you. It's in two weeks, back home. Call me when you get this message, I'll give you the details later. Okay, uh, talk to you later." The phone clicked off and I stood there. Matt was dead? Why was he calling me, why not Matt's mom or even my mom? I sighed and pulled out my phone. I sent him a quick text letting him know I got his message and then turned my phone off. I walked over to the couch and sat at Anthony's feet. I leaned back and closed my eyes. I took in a deep breath and let it out. Anthony shifted and when his eyes noticed me, he sat up and smiled his crooked little smile.
"Hey, you're finally home." His voice was rough with sleep.
"Hey," I smiled hesitantly.
"You okay?" He asked and I shrugged.
"Uh, my mom left a message on the machine. I guess one of my old friends passed away. His funeral's in two weeks and they want me there." I told him and he widened his eyes and nodded.
"Well, are you going to go?" He asked me and I nodded.
"I mean, Matt's mom wants me there, I kind of have to." I told him and he nodded.
"Matt Davis?" He asked and I nodded.
"He was sick, I didn't even know about it." I told him and he nodded.
"Yeah, I heard that." He said and I sighed.
"Well anyways," I closed my eyes and then stood up. "I need some sleep."
The next morning, I woke up in a weird daze. I got ready for work and headed off to work without even saying bye to Anthony.
In the car, I turned my phone on and saw that Emilio had not only called me twice, but texted me like five times. I closed my eyes for a second and threw my phone in the passenger seat.
At work, I was in my office facebooking 'Matthew Davis', when my receptionist called my phone.
"Yes?" I answered. "I'm very busy Bianca." I told her and she cleared her throat. Bianca was my brand new assistant, who was a little afraid of me, and even though she had no reason to be afraid, I liked messing around with her.
"Yes, Ms. Remming, but you have someone here to see you." She said.
"Well who is it? Just send them through." I told her.
"Well, he doesn't work here, that's why I thought I'd call and ask." She said and I rolled my eyes. It was Anthony, she knew to just let him in.
"Let him in." I sighed and hung up the phone. I closed out of the Facebook tab and opened my work before pulling out my compact and checking my makeup. I fluffed up my hair real quick and put on a touch of lip gloss before going back to looking busy. There was a knock on the door and I stood up, smiling.
