"'The first condition of immortality is death.' Stanislaw Jerzy Lec."
Brrrrrrrnnnnnnnngg
"Don't forget your essays on literature's ideas of immortality are due Thursday!"
As Mr. Ramuch said this Sophie rushed out of the classroom so she could, as usual, get to her Tuesday afternoon babysitting job for the Johnsons.
Sophie jogged across the weather-beaten school parking lot to her old yellow bug, which she "endearingly" called the crapmobile, as it had been falling apart on her ever since she bought it. She threw her binders onto the passenger-side floor, stuck the key into the ignition, and cruised onto the highway to get to the Johnsons' house in the suburbs.
But, what Sophie had unfortunately not noticed when she left, was that she was running on empty. When she finally realized that she wouldn't be able to get far, as she was distracted by Elton John's Crocodile Rock, which she had on as loud as she possibly could, as usual, she was too late.
She pulled the crapmobile onto the side of the road, cursing herself for not checking the gas before leaving.
Sophie, after calming herself down by kicking the tires, called the Johnsons, telling them that she would be a few minutes late.
She got back into her car and sat on its cracked leather seats. Sophie called her father and asked if he could drive her to the Johnsons'.
He said that he'd be there in five minutes.
But, in three, Sophie's life was to be turned upside-down.
Sophie turned her radio up louder, hoping to tune out the loud sounds of the highway. So, when the truck came around on the highway, she didn't notice.
She was flung, still singing Don MacLean's American Pie, out of her car and into the ditch beside the highway.
This accident was one that would be spoken of for years to come. Whether it was because of the unpredictability of it, the coincidence of events that led to it, or the loss of a teenage life, you cannot be sure. Though, it was probably the latter.
Sophie was immortalized by that crash. But that doesn't mean that she, herself, was immortal.
