We claimed our bags and headed over to long-term parking (which barely meant long term, it just meant over 24 hours). Putting everything in the trunk was a tight fit, but we made it work. Joy had been on edge about letting Calum in a car, not that she didn't have a reason to, but she took my keys and insisted that she drove. Jasey called shotgun before I had the chance to in my own damn car so I got stuck in the back with Calum.
It wasn't that I wanted to stay 3298 miles away from Calum, though it made my heart rate a bit more normal, but I definitely didn't want to be as close to him as I was. In the back of my beat up muscle car, there was no way to sit comfortably that our knees didn't touch. I moved my hand to rest it on the small seat between us and touch his, as if I was going to hold it. I jerked away, watching him gulp and look in the other direction.
When we got back to the house, Calum was confused. "I don't remember where I live,' He laughed sadly. "This is awesome."
I watched Joy turn away, hiding tears as we retrieved our things from the trunk. Jasey rushed after her inside, probably going to see if she was okay, leaving me like a fish out of water with Calum again. We stepped inside and I hung my keys on the hook, asking sheepishly, "Do you want me to show you around?"
"Yeah, sure," He chuckled awkwardly as we kicked off our shoes.
I walked him around, showing him the living room, garage, laundry room, and dining room before heading down the hallway to his room. "And here is casa de Calum," I smiled, then shrugged. "Or at least it used to be." Though most of his things were still in there, it had lost the Calum vibe over the years.
"I know I play bass," He said, putting his bags down and walking over to his old bass guitar stood up in the corner. "But I don't remember how."
"I have no idea how you do it, I just know you do it well," I shrugged. "I'm going to put my bags down, I--"
"Why didn't you leave them in the car?" He asked, putting the guitar down and walking over to mess with a little incense box on his dresser. "Ya know, so you could just take them home with you."
"This is home," I replied.
"What?"
"I live here," I said, stepping out back into the hallway. As I walked to the basement door, he swung himself around the door frame, holding onto it and hanging out into the hallway. I turned back and asked, "Yeah?"
"You live here?" His voice was high, like he didn't believe me.
"This has been my room since I was like, six years old," I nodded, pulling it open and stepping down the stairs. When I got to the bottom, the door popped open again and Calum walked down cautiously, like he was scared to see what was down there.
"So wait, you were my girlfriend, but you lived with me since you were a kid, but we're not together, but you still live here."
"Correct," I nodded, putting my bags by my bed and sitting down.
"I don't understand," He sighed, plopping down beside me.
"It's all a long, complicated.." I sighed, unable to to continue as my door opened again.
Jasey called down the stairs, "Tails, can you take me home?"
"We'll talk later," I said, standing up.
I drove Jasey home and she didn't get out of the car right away. "I know this must be hard," She started.
"No, you don't know at all." I said, running my hands through my hair.
She shrugged, opening the car door. "I'll see you at work tomorrow, call me if you need anything. Love you."
"Love you, too," I sighed as she shut the door and headed up to the house.
