Faith's POV
*slight trigger warning for mentions of abuse and alcohol addiction*
"Faith! Get up!" my mom shouted. I opened my eyes and fumbled around for my glasses. I had fallen asleep with them on and they fell off in my bed. When I found them I breathed a sigh of relief because they weren't broken. I looked at my phone and when I realized it was 7:25 I stumbled out of bed and threw on the outfit I picked out last night, a yellow sweater, my light blue jeans, and my white converse. I went into the bathroom and frowned at myself in the mirror. I felt like a mess. Nothing new... I haven't felt put together since we moved to Brookville. Not since my boyfriend broke up with me. Not since the divorce... I pulled myself together and put minimal makeup on and went to the kitchen.
"There you are. Are you ready for your first day?" my mom asked.
"Not really, I'm starting in the middle of the year and I don't know anyone" I said as I grabbed something to eat.
"You're starting at the beginning of the second semester and you can make friends at auditions for the musical" she said and rubbed my back, "I know this situation isn't ideal but we have to make the best of it." She was right about it not being ideal and she was right about trying to make friends at auditions. I was a half decent actor and singer and when my new principal found out that I had been in most of the productions at my old school he immediately put me in a drama class and gave me the things to audition for the musical. He told me it would be a great way to make friends.
"Lets go, we need to get there as early as possible so I have time to figure out where I need to go for first hour" I said. My mom grabbed her keys and I grabbed my backpack. The car ride to school was painfully quiet but it gave me time to think. I wasn't upset with my mom. Infact, I was happy that she had been trying to be there for me as much as possible these past few months. I know that I should've been relieved when mom divorced my dad.I mean...we were finally free from all the abuse he had put us through, but it still hurt. He wasn't always that way. He used to be a good man. But he was so depressed after his brother died and he started drinking more than usual. He spiraled into addiction and spiraled into abusing me and my mom. I thought that maybe if he got some help it would all better, but he wasn't even getting better. He was spending all his time in the bars. Mom ended up calling the cops, got a divorce, and moved us away from him.
"Honey have a good day. I'll be looking forward to hearing about all your classes" she said.
"I'll try" I said and got out of the car. Brookville West High was bigger than my old school. The school had 3 floors and 2 gyms and an entrance with a sign above it that said "Fine Arts Wing" that was attached to what looked like the band room. It didn't have that many students attending so god knows why the building was so huge. I knew I was gonna get lost at least twice today. I realized I was blocking the sidewalk and moved out of the way. I wasn't paying attention when I did and accidentally bumped into a guy knocking him to the ground.
"Oh gosh I'm so sorry" I said and helped him with the pieces of paper he dropped. I looked at them and realized it was sketches of people from real life and books.
"These are really good. Did you draw these?" I asked.
"Oh uh yeah I did" he said and stood up. I handed him the drawings and he organized them so they were all going the same way. While he was doing that I was able to get a closer look at him. He was attractive. He had brown hair and blue eyes and was taller than me.
"Hey, my first class of the day is Art, could you maybe show me where that is?" I asked.
"Yeah, here follow me" he said. We walked in silence through a door by the band room and entered the fine arts wing.
"My name is Quinn by the way" he said and smiled at me. His smile was amazing. I blushed and replied,
"My name is Faith"
"Faith. That's a really pretty name" he said. I blushed even harder and he laughed a bit.
"I haven't seen you around before, did you just move here?" he asked, "Well I mean obviously you just moved here if you're asking for help finding the Art room. I mean it could just be that I've just never see you before but I think I would remember- I'm sorry I talk to much." I giggled at how flustered he was getting.
"It's fine. Yes I just moved here from Texas" I explained. We turned a corner and entered another door with doors leading to classrooms.
"Which teacher do you have?" he asked.
"Uh Mrs. Elaina" I said, looking at my schedule. He held open the door on the left and I walked through. He followed behind me.
"Cool, I'm in her first hour too" he said, "She's been my Art teacher since elementary school. Well not in junior high, she transferred to the high school my Freshman Year"
"That's cool. Is she nice?" I asked and sat down.
"Yeah, she's really chill. Most kids try to take advantage of how chill she is" he explained and sat next to me.
"That's not right, why don't they just not take the class if they do that?"
"They leave the classroom halfway through class everyday so it's not like their really taking the class" he said, "What grade are you in?"
"I'm a Junior" I said "What grade are you?"
"I'm a Junior too, can I see your schedule so I can see if we have any classes together?" he asked. I handed him my schedule and he took his pencil and put a Q next to some of the classes.
"I put a Q next to the classes we have together" he explained. I looked at my schedule. We had Art, Drama, English, and Math together.
"Hello, my name is Mrs. Elaina for those who are new" the teacher said. She started class and talked about how the semester was gonna go. I half listened but I thought about how I somehow made a friend within the first ten minutes I was at this school. Maybe this wasn't gonna be so bad after all...
