I woke up with amnesia. The only thing I could remember was my personal information. I am a boy, I am fifteen years old, I have brown hair and brown eyes, and I have a slightly pale complexion. But I couldn't remember my own name.
I opened my eyes and looked around. I was in a hospital room and lots of people were surrounding me. I didn't know any of them.
A woman with long brown hair and brown eyes walked up to me and smiled with tears in her eyes. She leaned in and hugged me. "We're so glad you're awake, Jeremy."
I just sat there, confused. She pulled away slowly and had an expression on her face, like she was hurt.
"Jeremy, what's wrong?" she asked.
I looked at her. She was someone important, but I couldn't quite place it. "Who's Jeremy? Who are you?" I said carefully.
She kept the same expression, but more tears came to her eyes. She returned to the crowd.
A man with brown hair, hazel eyes, and glasses had a concerned look on his face. "Maria," he said to the woman. "What's wrong?"
"He doesn't remember me." She broke down and put her face into the man's shoulder. "He doesn't remember his own name."
The man looked at the ground, then looked up at me and said, "Jeremy. Don't you remember us?"
I shook my head. "You guys are someone important, but I don't know who you are. I'm sorry."
I really did feel sorry. My brain was working hard to remember who these people were, but I couldn't quite place it. I knew they were very important, but I just didn't know who they were.
"It's okay," said the man with glasses. "We'll just take him home and show him around; try to jog his memory." He turned to woman who was crying. "Does that sound okay, Maria?"
She sniffled, then put her finger under her nose and nodded.
"Okay, then," said the man. "Here, come with us."
The crying woman and the man with glasses took my hand and gave me some clothes to change into. I went into the bathroom and put on a blank maroon v-neck and blue denim jeans. I came out and they took me to the front desk and checked me out.
They loaded me up into a light blue 1967 Cadillac Eldorado convertible with the hood up. I didn't know how I recognized the car, but a song that I couldn't quite place started playing in my head. It was a man talking with music in the background: "You know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado convertible. Hot pink! With whale skin hubcaps, and all-leather cow interior, and big brown baby seal eyes for headlights, yeah!" I started chuckling.
The woman turned to me and said, "What's wrong? Why are you laughing?"
I opened my mouth to speak, but then I remembered that it was a song that my parents probably didn't want me listening to.
"Nothing," I said.
We got into the car, and a familiar song started playing on the radio. Per the norm, I couldn't quite place it. Then the man started singing, and a little light went on in my brain for a second.
"That's . . .Eddie Vedder," I said.
The woman turned to me with hope in her eyes. "That's right. Do you remember what the song is called?"
I strained my brain to remember. "No, I don't."
The woman licked her lips and shifted so she could see me better. "The song bears your namesake," she said carefully.
I closed my eyes and tried to remember. On the radio, the chorus of the song started playing. I had a memory of me and the man with glasses in a diner. I had turned to him and said, "You know that song that you always play in the car?"
"Yeah," he had said.
"That kid's name?" I had said. "Is it Johnny, Jimmy, or Timmy?"
He looked up from his food. "It's Jeremy," he said.
The memory faded out and I looked up. "My name is Jeremy," I said.
"Yes!" the woman shouted. She smiled and tears filled her eyes.
I looked at the radio. "This song is Jeremy by Pearl Jam."
"Yes!" said the man and he accidently punched the roof.
We all started laughing as we drove to my home, where there would be plenty of things I could try to remember.
