I knelt by my prey, one hand resting gently on the redheaded girl's chest.
The young redhead flailed and thrashed wildly, overcome with agonizing pain. Her breathing was coarse and ragged, and she gasped for air. Her midnight-blue eyes were wide with horror, and she had begun to froth at the mouth.
"Shh. Do not be afraid, little one." I whispered soothingly. "The pain will be over soon, I promise."
In an effort to ease my prey's suffering, I began to sing.
It was a lullaby, but one of darkness and shadows. It was not the kind of lullaby one would sing to an infant or frightened child. Nor one on their deathbed.
Nevertheless, with each word that left my lips, the redheaded girl's muscles relaxed. Her breathing slowed and deepened, and she closed her midnight-blue eyes.
But before I could finish the final verse, an arrow whizzed past my head, barely missing.
I looked up to see...nothing.
Then SOMETHING struck me in the gut, throwing me to the ground.
I was so shocked by the sudden attack that by the time I had recovered, my assailant had vanished, and they had taken my prey with them.
"Oh, no." My eyes widened in horror. "Oh, gods, no."
This was bad. This was really, really REALLY bad.
Because...by saving my prey, they had DOOMED everyone else.
