Markus' POV
I put my phone back in my pocket after my call with North, smiling at the thought of my friends as I made my way around the supermarket, knowing the place very well and finding the things I needed easily.
It was a chilly day in Detroit but I was wearing my favourite jacket Simon had bought for me and was enjoying the time outside of my studio. Going out always gave me inspiration for the paintings I made and I seemed to be lacking in inspiration recently, wanting to find something... perfect to paint. If such a thing even existed.
Lost in my thoughts I realised I was in the wrong aisle and moved to turn around when I caught sight of a brown-haired boy next to me, face gentle and body petite. He seemed to be lost as he scanned the shelves, looking nervous and a little frightened at the people around him.
"Are you lost? Maybe I could help you find whatever you're looking for." He looked around suddenly at the sound of my voice, letting out a small yelp at the sudden intrusion. "Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you."
His face flushed a light shade of pink and I couldn't help but find it adorable as he looked at me, evading eye contact as best he could. My hand twitched at the sight of his eyes, stunning doe eyes that were so innocent and beautiful. His cheeks were laced with small freckles that adorned his body like beauty marks and I felt my breath get caught in my throat, heart thumping wildly and butterflies swarming in my stomach.
"T-That's okay. I was just looking for some red wine but I haven't been in this shop before and I'm having trouble finding the one I want." His voice was silky and sweet despite being very timid and it grew stronger towards the end, a little bit of confidence peaking through.
"I'll help, what type are you looking for?" He looked down and fiddled with the sleeves of his shirt, cheeks still heated slightly. How could someone so adorable exist? "It's called Chardonnay." I was glad that I knew where that was, feeling elated that I could help this beautiful stranger and spend more time with him.
"I know where that is, follow me." He nodded in a silent thanks and I walked over to where I knew Chardonnay to be with him by my side, smaller than me by a considerable amount. "Here it is," I said, almost triumphant as I held it to him, hands brushing against each other as he took it from me.
"Thank you very much, I appreciate the help." And then he smiled. A small and timid smile that was still bright and warm. My heart beat rapidly in response and I flashed a smile of my own, still mesmerised by his beauty. How could a person this perfect even exist? It was beyond me.
"It's no problem, I come here often so I know the place really well," I said, hoping to draw the conversation out for as long as I could. "I... don't get out much, to be honest. But thank you again for the help, it was very kind of you."
My heart fluttered at the compliment and I stuck my hand out. "Markus." I blushed and quickly continued so he wouldn't be confused. "My name, I mean. I'm Markus." I felt like an absolute idiot as he softly laughed, shaking my hand with a smile, one that was brighter than last time.
"Connor." What a beautiful name. I felt so wonderful to finally know this god-like person's name and I felt the urge to test it out on my tongue. "Connor. The name suits you." His eyes seemed so much brighter than they did before and I noticed that he had stopped fiddling with his hands, looking more relaxed and less tense.
"Thank you, that's very nice of you." My phone rang rather loudly from my pocket and I jumped at the sudden noise, not having expected it as I fished my phone from my pocket and put it on loudspeaker. "Hello?" North immediately answered back, spunky as ever. "Hey, Markus. I Forgot to ask you to pick me up some bread while you were out." I nodded though she couldn't see me. "Yeah sure, I'll see you later. Bye." I hung up after ending the conversation quickly, looking back at Connor who looked slightly awkward.
"Sorry about that." His smile was still there and he rocked back and forth slightly on his heels, looking comfortable once again. "I assure you, It's alright. Was she your girlfriend or..." He didn't finish his sentence and I shook my hands in front of me, wanting this beautiful boy to know that I was single.
"No, no. My friends and I live together, that's all. North's been my friend since forever." I thought for a second then quickly came up with an idea. "I can give you my number if you want, that way we could arrange something and you can meet her. She's really nice when she wants to be, just don't get on her bad side or try to start a fight."
I winked at him to let him know I was joking- well mostly anyway and he nodded, pulling out his phone and typing in the password. "Sure, I'm sure she's a wonderful person and I would love to meet her." I couldn't stop the cheesy smile that spread over my face, mind practically bursting with excitement.
He handed the phone over to me and I typed my number in carefully, making sure I'd definitely gotten it right. "There, text me so I can add you to my contacts." He looked down at his screen and pressed a few buttons as a ding sounded out from my phone, I saved the contact and looked at the cute dog emoji he'd texted me.
"That's adorable, you like dogs?" He nodded enthusiastically, eyes lighting up like Christmas lights as he gushed about the animals. "Yes, they're the best. My dad has a dog and he's so big and fluffy. I adore dogs so much." His enthusiasm was infective and I could hardly keep my own smile at bay. "But I also like fish, though I've never been able to have one."
He pouted slightly at that and for a second I thought about the alcohol in his grip, an item that couldn't get me anywhere near as intoxicated as Connor did.
"We have fish in my house, there's a huge aquarium in the main room." Connor gasped and I tugged my eyes away from his pink lips as he started talking, focusing on his gentle eyes instead. "No way! Oh, you're so lucky, I wish I could see them. Can you send me photos? What type of fish do you have?" I laughed at his questions, grinning and moving over to the left as another lady came down the aisle.
"You can come over if you want, I'd be happy to show them to you." He smiled a dazzling smile, practically jumping up and down on the spot in excitement. "Really! Oh, I would love that so much." My nerves spiked a little as I thought about my next statement and I drew in a short breath. "Well, if you were free now you could come over for the afternoon. I live close so we could walk there and I can drop you back to your house when you're done."
His smile dropped for a second and he looked down at the bottle in his hands, eyes darting from left to right as he fiddled with his fingers once more. "I um, I dunno. I've been gone for a while and I should probably get back. I'm free tomorrow afternoon though if that suits your schedule."
He looked apprehensive about the thought though and I felt disappointment sink in my chest. "You don't have to come if you feel uncomfortable Connor." He shook his head as soon as the words had left my mouth, eyes snapping back up from their long gaze on the floor to reach my gaze.
"No, I want to come over and I would love to see your fish and meet your friends. I'm just busy today, that's all." I nodded, trying not to stare at his determined gaze whilst also trying to imprint his beautiful, stunning eyes and face into my memory so I could paint him later. Or was that weird? I should probably ask for his consent first.
"Okay, I'll meet you at the coffee shop down the road then. Since you don't know where I live and all. How does 12:30 sound?" He nodded and hummed in response, bottle held loosely in his hands as if he wanted to forget its existence.
"Yeah, see you then." He paused and looked down at his phone, seeing the time and suddenly panicking. "Oh I'm late, I've got to go Markus but I'll see you tomorrow. Thank you for lending your assistance."
He rushed off as I waved to him, eyes fixed longingly as I watched him go. There was something truly incredible about him. The only way to describe it would be that he was perfect.
My heart leapt happily and for a second I couldn't believe that I'd just met and talked and got such a wonderful guys number. If I didn't know better I would've thought it was a dream. If it was a dream though, I never want to wake up.
