Kalena woke up with a groan. It was 6:31 in the morning, and she didn't want to wake up. One of the downsides to being depressed, she thought. She knew that if she didn't get up, her friend Charity might kill herself. She smiled at the thought.
She quickly got dressed and ran out the door. She ran over into her bus stop, where her friend Paige was waiting for her.
"Hey, what took you so long Kalena?" she asked.
"Heh, I overslept!" Kalena replied cheerfully. She actually was never that happy, but she put on a mask, so all of her friends could be happy with her. It was awful logic, and it was wearing her out, but she was in a habit of doing it.
"That's okay! I oversleep too!" Paige responded brightly. Kalena stared at her. How could she be so happy? Kalena reached inside her bag. Inside was the math homework she was too busy to complete. She pulled it out and started to work on it. All the while, Paige was talking to her, and she was just nodding and acting like she heard her. A few minutes later the bus pulled up to the curb, and Kalena and Paige got on the bus.
As soon as they got on the bus and sat down, the kids behind them started to scream their heads off. Kalena asked them to be quiet, but they wouldn't listen. Must they always be this way? she thought. The ride was long and bumpy. Kalena started a conversation with Paige about a couple of little things, and before they knew it, they were at the drop-off point. Kalena got off the bus with a skip in her step, even though it was fake, nobody could believe she was mentally dying. As she started to walk to her school, she heard a faint voice calling her name.
"Kalena!" The voice was much louder now, and she recognized it. She spun around.
"Lydia!" Kalena hugged her friend. If Lydia was here, then...
Suddenly someone else joined the hug.
"Hi Charity!" Kalena hugged her other depressed friend. "How are you?"
"Ah, I guess okay. Ever since LYDIA took my knife, I just don't feel the same, ya know?" Charity sounded sad. Kalena knew how she felt. She had become addicted to the pain of cutting herself as well.
"Hey, I took away the knife for your own good!" Lydia protested. Lydia really was trying, Kalena noted. Well, then again, she did stop me from cutting myself as well, Kalena thought.
"So Lydia, how are you?" Kalena asked. She really did want all her friends to be happy. It was okay if she wasn't, but if another friend isn't, then she is protecting them with all her might.
Okay, this is my first chapter I've ever done! Thank you so much for reading this far! I know I probably bore you out with this LOOONG intro, but you will thank me later!
