Masking

"Try it on"
The mask is uncomfortable at first
It feels unnatural, stiff
It doesn't match the person behind it
"Never take it off"
It hurts, twisting skin to conform
You try to protest, this can't be right
But the mask grows tighter
It's controlling
"Make me proud"
Slowly, the mask feels more natural
You don't feel so suffocated
It's almost comforting to have
The mask makes you respected by others
No one ridicules you because you look just like them
"You look beautiful"
It hurts, ripping away at your true self
You want to remove it, be free again
But look at the progress you've made
You're stronger than this monster Inside you
"Don't give up"
But you are giving up
You are surrendering every part of yourself
Letting this mask cover over it all
Like the real you never existed
"Don't fight it"
You reach up to pull the mask away
You can't hide who you are
It stings as you tear it off and you realize
That while you were trying to be something you aren't
You lost pieces of who you are
"Look at what you've done"
Finally you find the strength to speak up
You are not a puzzle piece that is forced to fit
You are not a disease that needs to be cured
You are not a puppet to be controlled
No, you are a queen, a king, victorious
And you will hide beneath a mask no longer
