The rain splashed down on the pavement below. The world is no longer dark as lightning flashes through the sky. Thunder slowly followed, echoing across the sky.
Staring out the window of a house is a little boy around the age of 6. He had eyes filled with wonder. Eyes that just wanted to see all of the world and absorb all of its untold mysteries. The boy said nothing as he watched the storm unfold in front of him. It fascinated him, the flashes of lightning and the way the rain danced across the driveway pavement. Another flash of lightning and the child moved closer to the window, grinning in anticipation, waiting for the following thunder. The thunder came and shook the house with its deafening sound, making its presence known to all. The little boy was filled with wonder and glee at the monstrous sound.
The boy's mother, coming down the stairs, rushed over to him. She scolded him and told him not to be so close to the window. Confused as to why she did not share his fascination with the storm, he left the window. She lead the boy back upstairs to his room and kissed him goodnight. The boy looked up at his ceiling with glow-in-the-dark star and planet stickers scattered across. They formed the solar system. Though he had not learned about it in school; he had arranged them himself.
Many years passed by and as the boy grew up he was fascinated by every little thing. His fascination got him into trouble on many different occasions. Sometimes when he was out with his mother he would simply walk away, distracted by everything and anything that he saw. His mother would have to constantly hold his hand, or put him on a child leash to not lose him. In school he would be late to his classes because he would stare out the window and watch the sky. If it was a really nice day he would be out in the courtyard sitting there; simply enjoying the little nature within the school walls. All of his teachers were annoyed at him for that, yet they still loved him. He was the smartest kid in all of his classes and participated in many different clubs. He had gotten many scholarships to lots of great schools. His parents were very proud and happy for him. His classmates and friends were all envious of his brains and knack for doing so well in school despite how he behaved.
By the age of 22 he was not in college, for he chose not to go. This angered many of his classmates, friends, teachers and family. They did not want all of his abilities to go to waste, but he would not listen to them. Instead, he would go where the world wanted him to go. The world was a wondrous place and he wanted to see every nook and cranny of it. Then he would try and share its beauty with all who lived in this world and not. Everything still fascinated him just as when he was a child. He would live his life as an adventure instead of going to school and getting a job. That kind of life did not interest him at all, sitting at a desk day after day working away. For he could always come back again to live another life that way. His friends and family told him that was not a very good way to live his life and he would end up homeless before he knew it. But he just shook his head and laughed at them, telling them that he would be back later to do it again. It seemed selfish of him to ignore all of his friends and family's requests and questions for him about his life. That is what happens when one is not familiar with mortal feelings. He most definitely doesn't know what to do with them, but he should as he has done this many times before. He ignored everyone and this frustrated them further. They would try and get him to go to school too, but he just told them repeatedly that he would not go.
When he reached 30 he was homeless and wandering around from place to place having the time of his life. This was the kind of life he had aimed for, and he was happy he had achieved it. He was experiencing everything from a different angle this time. Even though he had seen everything before, it still amazed him how beautiful the world was. He still kept in touch with his friends and family by talking to them here and there. He would tell them all about the beauty of the world, and about all of the interesting people he had meet along his journey too. They were all disappointed in him and told him that he could do better than this. He could not understand why they were disappointed, so he told them again that he was seeing the world for what it was. That he was seeing the world from a different perspective this time. He was living his best life and this is how he wanted to spend his life, seeing all of the beauty in the world from the most terrible places. Repeatedly, he kept trying to tell them that, but they didn't understand why someone would want to live that way. After a while, he gave up trying to explain himself to them. Soon enough, they gave up trying to get him to live a better life. They were at the very least happy that he was happy.
Then one day, a few years later, while he was walking along down a street talking with the local people along the way, a car whipped past and lost control. He did not see the car until it was too late. He felt the impact of the car and that was it. Death had come and taken his life, and there was nothing that could be done about it. All of his friends and family were devastated. Maybe if he had gone to college and gotten a job he would have lived a long and prosperous life. Yet here he was being lowered into his grave at the age 33. They told stories about him, and how he saw the beauty in the smallest of things. Then they would cry because they should have treated him a little better when he was still alive. But he was dead, and there was nothing they could do about that.
In another place and time he was being greeted by an old friend, a man with beautifully dark skin and an even darker suit. The man walked with great purpose like he was important, and he was. His eyes were hidden behind impossibly dark sunglasses, and he had short buzzed hair. The man came up to him, making sure to call him by his title, and asked him how his life had been down on Earth.
He responded excitedly with how beautiful and wonderful the world was, and how his life was much better than the last one he had lived. Though he did regret being very selfish, it was a very mortal thing of him to do. Then he told the man about how he had gotten hit by a car ending his life in just an instant. He was disappointed at that too, but there really is not much that you can do in that situation. The man with the sunglasses took out a tablet and made note of this. Still speaking, he had a smile dancing across his face as he went on and on about how extraordinary life on Earth was, and how each person was different and still fascinating in their own way. Then he described how wonderful his family was, and he how he was sad to have disappointed them. He still had yet to understand the mortal feelings that washed over him whenever he lived on Earth. The man in the suit shook his head at his childishness, for if he did any more than that he would surely get in terrible trouble with him.
The two of them then walked off into the distance to a pair of giant golden doors. They walked through not to be seen again. But maybe, just maybe if you look around hard enough on Earth you can find the curious man living out another life as he finds even more wonders in the world.
