Sitting in her room, she gazed out the window at the night sky. She was supposed to be asleep, but it wasn't like Mom came and reinforced it.
"Grandpa?" She gazed at the brightest star in the sky. "I know I keep talking to you, but I miss you. Mom keeps having new boyfriends. They're scary. Can you come back and play with me? Mom is too busy."
There was no answer, just like every night. She stared at the star. "Grandpa?" Nothing.
Sighing, she laid down next to her brother. He was under the blanket, peaceful. She wished she was too. Peaceful.
She couldn't sleep. Creaks, whispers, laughs, it was all too loud in the settling night. No cars, nothing. Just Mom and someone laughing.
Curling the blanket around her shoulders, she felt alone. Her mom was there, she loved her mom a lot. Her brother was there, she loved him too, but she couldn't tell them things. Ask questions.
She talked to Grandpa a lot. One time, Grandma told her that when Grandpa died, he turned into the biggest star in the sky. If she found the star, she could talk to him. He was watching and listening. He was always listening to her, even if he didn't answer.
In the quiet, she started singing. She loved singing, she did it when she was sad. She thought she was good. Mom didn't listen to her sing, Mom had to work.
Still, she could not sleep. So, she climbed out of the bed and snuck to the doorway. They didn't have doors on all the doorframes; only Mom and the front door. She pushed back the blanket barrier and looked in the kitchen.
Mom was talking to a man. They were drinking again. She took that chance to creep to the laundry room. Diving into the piles of clean clothes on the floor, she covered up in their warmth. Pulling more from the dryer, she shivered. Too cold.
Of course she knew what drinking was. And smoking. Mom and Dad did it. Dad never came home, he didn't want to. She thought it was because he found a new Mom and lived with her. That made Mom sad.
The smell of lavender laundry detergent filled her nose. She loved that smell and loved the warmth of the laundry. This was her favorite place in the house.
Not house. Trailer.
She used to have a puppy she snuggled with. It got eaten by a fox. Dad threw it outside on a leash and left it in the cold. She was sad. She loved it and pretended it was her kid and she took care of it.
They had a dog named Missy. She had puppies once but Mom sold them. They couldn't keep one, they didn't have money for that. So she put them in a box and sold them. Some of them were free.
Missy ran away once. They caught her and chained her to the house. She was wild and it scared the girl.
She still couldn't sleep. She was cold again. She closed her eyes again and tried. She tried hard, but it didn't work. So, she went to the window.
"Grandpa, can you make me sleep? I can't and I need help. I have nightmares. Can you please come snuggle with me until I sleep? Then, you can go back up in the sky and watch me." She pleaded.
Laying down again, she closed her eyes once more. She was warm again, and felt safe. Her eyes were tired now and it felt like Grandpa was holding her in his lap.
She fell asleep.
