Pepperony one shots

You and me

Tony and Pepper had invited some co-workers and friends over for dinner. They all brought their kids so it was less formal and boring. Something had been off with Tony and Pepper needed to find out why. They all sat around the table eating, Pepper noticed a woman across from Tony making goo-goo eyes at him which made her grip his hand a little harder under the table.
"Yaknow I'm surprised we got to have this dinner, normally Peppers so busy with work we don't have time." Tony said to break the silence.
"Well you know works so important to me." Pepper said back.
"Yeah I know one time you even had to miss Maria's school play for a meeting." He said not realising it hurt Pepper deeply. She got up from the table suddenly and strutted to the bathroom.
"Can you just excuse me for a second." Tony asked, getting up from his seat and following Pepper. He knocked on the door of the bathroom lightly.
"Pepper Honey, are you okay?" He asked sweetly.
"I can't believe you would say something like that, yes I missed our daughters play but you didn't have to make it seem like I didn't try my hardest to be there." She cried.
"I'm sorry honey, just come back to dinner." He whispered to the door.
"No, not now you've embarrassed me like that." She sobbed. Tony went back to the table to announce that there had been an emergency and everyone had to leave. One everyone had left he went to play with his kids, knowing Pepper would come out in her own time.
"Daddy, play sword fighting with us!" The children squealed. Tony picked up a foam sword and waved it around, when Maria hit him in his leg he fell to the ground pretending to be in pain as the children fell on top of him and laughed. When Pepper heard the laughing she immediately went to the playroom as she loved watching her kids smile and laugh. She leant up against the door frame watching Tony kiss and tickle the kids playfully. It put smile on her face and she entered the room to join them. They all played together for a while when Tony's phone rang and he left the room suddenly. It was unlike Tony to try and be out of hearing distance when he was on the phone so Pepper thought he was hiding something and he was. She followed him and got close enough so she could hear him but he couldn't see her.
"Hey, I cant wait. I've been waiting for you to call." He said to the person on the other side of the phone.
"Well we'll do it soon. We should meet-up. How bout New York next week? Peppers away on business and her moms got the kids for the weekend?" He continued talking.
"Sounds great, I can't wait. Bye." He put the phone down and Pepper pretended like she was just walking to the kitchen.

When they put the kids to bed they sat on the couch watching the tv. Pepper knew this was the perfect time to ask what she was thinking.
"Tony." She said hesitantly
"Yeah Baby?" He replied, putting his head on her shoulder, she shifted uncomfortably which made him lift his head and look at her.
"Are...Are you cheating on me?" She asked hesitantly. Tony was shell shocked at her words. He moved back and took her hand in his.
"What?!" He exclaimed
"Are you with someone else?" She asked again.
"Of course not, I'm in love with you. Why would you ever think that baby?" He asked
"I heard you on the phone and it sounded like...well you know." She said as tears began forming in her eyes.
"That wasn't what it sounded like, I promise." He whispered and squeezed her hand lightly.
"Who were you speaking to them?" She said letting go of his hand.
"I...I can't tell you..." He said knowing she wouldn't believe him.
"What?! You can't tell me?! So I'm just supposed to hear you saying what you said and just take your word for it!" She almost shouted.
"I am not cheating on you." He firmly spoke.
"Tony I heard what you were saying! Don't lie to me!" She shouted loudly and stood up from the sofa. Maria heard the shouting and got out of bed to see what was happening.
"IM NOT CHEATING ON YOU, I THOUGHT YOU TRUSTED ME!" He was the one shouting now. Maria walked into the living room and both Pepper and Tony's faces softened.
"Why are you shouting?" She asked innocently but Pepper and Tony couldn't answer her.
"Oh darling you should be sleeping, come on I'll tuck you in." Tony said softly getting up from the sofa and picking her up.
"I was planning to propose. I was talking to a jeweller." Tony whispered as he brushed past Pepper. Her heart leapt at his words.
He was going to propose.
