Before mankind, before all other life, there existed only two beings in the universe. Neither good or evil these two immortal beings, one cloaked in night and the other in light, fought without regard for the universe around them. Countless planets and stars were reduced to nothing as these two Titans fought. The battle seemed pointless as they were equal in power, but for millennia they fought. With no need for the comforts of food or rest their battle waged on, no force in the universe enough to deter them. Until the battle came unto a small delicate world known as Rune. There, for an unknown reason the two paused their battling for a time. It was during this pause that a small girl approached the two Titans as they faced off in a large field some distance from the nearest village. She was impossibly small against them and as she stood between them she while holding a bundle of small flowers in her hand. She looked back and forth between them and asked.
"What are you doing?" She said in complete innocence.
"Dueling" Responded the Titan in night. Speaking in the first language one that was understood by all.
"Why?" she inquired again pure innocence in her voice.
"It is what we have always done" This time it was the Titan in light who answered her.
"But why? Do you have a reason to fight?" At this, the Titans were shocked. Never before did a mere mortal question their actions nor, have they questioned why they fought they only continued to fight, and yet this small mortal girl questioned them.
"What difference does it make to you?" The Titan in night asked her.
"Well, no one should fight for no reason. It's just wrong, and it always seems to hurt others." At this, the two Titans thought upon their past and for the first time in their eons of existence, the felt sorrow and remorse for the countless lives they had ended in what now they saw was a fight without a reason. In that moment the girl looked up at them once more and offered each of them one of the small flowers she was carrying with her. Then the two knelt and diminished their size so that they were the size of an average man and they accepted the flowers as a treasure and a promise. A promise to never fight unless they had reason too. With their purpose gone the Titan in light left Rune in search of a new purpose.
The other stayed on Rune and asked the girl if there was anything he could do in her service to repent for his past.
"Help people" Was all she said to him.
"Okay" was all he said in reply. She then took him by his hand and led him back to her village. When she introduced him, she mentioned nothing of his past nor did she ask him to tell it. She instead showed him how to help people. And the people of her village were amazed at the abilities of this stranger who they knew nothing about. There came a point not so long after the Titan had begun living in the village that the villagers asked him to teach them how to do what he did. And so, with the girl's help he showed them, and they showed others, how to harness the energy flowing through the universe and use it. It was this teaching that brought magic into the world of Rune.
